their community or to attend recreation centres there.

(ii) How do you think the writers of the New Testament would try to persuade them to change their
minds? (12 marks)
(b) Would your family be happy if a help centre for drug addicts was set up near your home? Explain your
answers. (4 marks)

MARKIN G SCHEME
6. (a) (i) Reasons for these objections:

- they do not feel happy with anyone who is different
- its bad for business to have these people around
or any other reasonable answer (any 4 × 1 mark)

(ii) How the New Testament writers would try to persuade them to change their minds:
- Jesus said if we help other people in need it is just the same as helping him (Matt 25:31-46)
- we should love people because God first loved us (John 4:19-21)
- if you love God you must love your brother/people in need too
- be concerned about the well-being of other people not just your own (Phil 3: 11)
- we should not treat people differently just because they do not look the same as us (James 2:1-9), it
is a sin to do this
- Jesus mixed with all sorts of people so we should do the same and be accepting of others
- we should not consider ourselves more important than other people, God made us all
- we should be benevolent/impartial to all just as God is (Matt 5:44-45)
- we should be merciful as our Father in heaven is merciful (Luke 6:36)
- making money is not the most important thing in life, so it's not important if the businesses do not
make so much money (Matt 19:24; Mark 16:17-27; Luke 12:16-21)
or any other valid answer (any 6 × 2 marks)

Some candidates might want to answer along the following lines:
- as stewards of the environment we should support those who want to 'save the earth' so long as they act in
a way acceptable to Christians
- some situations are not 'black and white' e.g. a company cutting down trees in the rainforest may be the
only source of work for some workers
- a Christian might need to ignore the protests of the environmentalists to fulfil his first duty to provide for
his family
- many exploitative industries provides jobs for poor people and it may be wrong for a Christian to try to
close them down
- in many Third World countries it might be necessary to use the resources - as more developed countries
have done and are doing
