Q4 AFA Agricrop 10 Week 2
Q4 AFA Agricrop 10 Week 2
In sun drying, where mat and pavement drying are the most common, tools such as wooden rake, mats, net and canvas are
utilized. On the other hand, different types of dryer like batch, re-circulating and continuous flow dryer are used for
mechanical drying – where water from wet grains is removed using either ambient or heated air through grain bulk.
Lastly, the use of in-store dryer, though it requires long drying time from four days to two weeks long, helps produce
high- quality grains.
Have you experienced to see rice being dried along the roads or national highways just like the pictures below?
This lesson is designed to help you understand the whole concept and idea about rice drying particularly the traditional one.
It also discusses the benefits and limitations of sun drying and its methods, including the advantages, importance, and
reasons why farmers are still using or practicing the traditional system of rice drying.
Traditional drying systems are still practiced and carried out in many areas for some reasons:
Economical.
Ease of management.

IV.LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
2. Panicle drying – it is a traditional, small-scale method for individual farmers. In this method, the panicles are tied
in bundles and placed on pavements or mats or hung from frames. This method may cause uneven drying
because the grains on the outside dry faster than the grains on the inside.
3. Drying on mats or canvas – it is a medium-scale method for farmers, groups, and contractors. This is the
cleanest method. The grain can be easily mixed and quickly collected when dry.
4. Pavement drying – it is a method done in pavements. It is cheap as one will only need to buy a mat or canvas
(plastic); however, the grains are prone to being mixed with stones and grains since the grains are laid out on
the pavement to dry. Also a tool is needed to mix the grains from time to time.

LET’S SUMMARIZE….
Economical and ease of management are some reasons why traditional drying systems are still practiced in some
areas.
Sun drying is a traditional system of drying wherein the grains are spread under the sun to reduce the
moisture content. The different methods of sun drying are: field drying, panicle drying, drying on mat or
canvas and pavement drying. We must follow the three important steps in sun drying - spread, mix, and
protect the grains.
In this lesson, we need to be aware that sun drying has its benefits and limitations.
Benefits Limitations
It is economical as compared to mechanical drying It needs too much work.
It is favorable to the environment You can only dry only a limited amount of grain per day
It is hard to control the temperature
