I. LESSON TITLE Traditional system of rice dying.
II. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING
Undertake rice drying activity as directed according to enterprise guidelines.
COMPETENCIES (MELCs)
III. CONTENT/CORE CONTENT Rice drying activity.
IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I.Introduction (Time Frame: 15 minutes)
In the previous lesson, you learned that in rice production, preparation of tools, materials, and equipment ahead of time
is very important because drying needs to be carried out at the right time to avoid seeds deterioration and losses. Also,
you learned about the two methods of dying – the tradition or sun drying and mechanical drying where specific tools
and materials are used to make sure that the process is done accurately and properly.

In sun drying, where mat and pavement drying are the most common, tools such as wooden rake, mats, net and canvas are
utilized. On the other hand, different types of dryer like batch, re-circulating and continuous flow dryer are used for
mechanical drying – where water from wet grains is removed using either ambient or heated air through grain bulk.

Lastly, the use of in-store dryer, though it requires long drying time from four days to two weeks long, helps produce
high- quality grains.

Have you experienced to see rice being dried along the roads or national highways just like the pictures below?

This lesson is designed to help you understand the whole concept and idea about rice drying particularly the traditional one.
It also discusses the benefits and limitations of sun drying and its methods, including the advantages, importance, and
reasons why farmers are still using or practicing the traditional system of rice drying.

After studying the Lesson, you are expected to:

a. Identify the traditional methods of rice dying.
b. Understand the traditional methods of rice drying.
c. Value the importance of using a traditional method of rice drying.
D. Development (Time Frame: 1 hour and 15 minutes)

Traditional drying systems are still practiced and carried out in many areas for some reasons:
 Economical.
 Ease of management.

Sun drying is a traditional method for reducing the

moisture content (MC) of paddy wherein the grains are
spread out under the sun. The sun heats up the grains
and the surrounding air. This causes the water to
evaporate from the grains, which makes them dry.

IV.LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

In sun drying there are 3 important steps that needs to be followed:

1. Spread the grains 2-4 cm thick and place the grains in well ventilated or windy areas.
2. Mix frequently. For uniform drying of grains, mix at least every 30 minutes.
3. Protect the grain from too hot temperature (50 Degree Celsius), rains and stray animals.

What are the benefits and limitations of sun drying?

 Sun drying is economical than mechanical drying.
 Sun drying is favorable to the environment.
 You cannot perform sun drying when it rains or after dark.
 Sun drying needs too much work and you can only dry a limited amount of grain per day.
 It is hard to control the temperature. If the grains get too hot, they will crack during milling.

What are the sun drying methods?

1. Field drying – it is usually done if the farmers need to wait for the thresher. The disadvantage of this method is that
it may cause fast grain deterioration especially when there is not enough air circulation to dry the grains and when
they get wet again at night because of the soil and the wet straw. In field drying, the rice plants are often stacked in
piles with the panicles inside to protect them from rain, birds, and rats. Because of this, it becomes very, very hot
inside the stacks.

2. Panicle drying – it is a traditional, small-scale method for individual farmers. In this method, the panicles are tied
in bundles and placed on pavements or mats or hung from frames. This method may cause uneven drying
because the grains on the outside dry faster than the grains on the inside.
3. Drying on mats or canvas – it is a medium-scale method for farmers, groups, and contractors. This is the
cleanest method. The grain can be easily mixed and quickly collected when dry.

4. Pavement drying – it is a method done in pavements. It is cheap as one will only need to buy a mat or canvas
(plastic); however, the grains are prone to being mixed with stones and grains since the grains are laid out on
the pavement to dry. Also a tool is needed to mix the grains from time to time.

Learning Task 1. Picture Identification.
