DRYING
OBJECTIVES:
1.Spread the grains 2-4 cm thick and place the grains in well
ventilated or windy areas.
2.Mix frequently, for uniform drying of grains, mix at least every
30 minutes.
3.Protect the grain from too hot temperature (50 degrees Celsius),
rains and stray animals.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS AND
LIMITATIONS OF SUN DRYING?
• Sun drying is economical than mechanical drying.
• Sun drying is favorable to the environment.
• You cannot perform sun drying when it rains or after dark.
• Sun drying needs too much work and you can only dry a limited amount of grain
per day.
• It is hard to control the temperature. If the grains get too hot, they will crack
during milling.
WHAT ARE THE SUN DRYING METHODS?
1.Field drying- it is usually done if the farmers need to wait for the
thresher. The disadvantage of this method is that it may cause fast
grain deterioration especially when there is not enough air circulation
to dry the grains and when they get wet again at night because of the
soil and the wet straw. In field drying, the rice plants are often stacked
in piles with the panicles inside to protect them from rain, birds and
rats. Because of this, it becomes very, very hot inside the stacks.
2. Panicle drying- it is a traditional, small-scale
method for individual farmers. In this method, the
panicles are tied in bundles and placed on pavements
or mats or hung from frames. This method may cause
uneven drying because the grains on the outside dry
faster than the grains on the inside.
3. Drying on mats or canvas- it is a medium- scale method for farmers,
groups, and contractors. This is the cleanest method. The grain can be easily
mixed and quickly collected when dry.
4. Pavement drying- it is a method done in pavements. It is cheap as one
will only need to buy a mat or canvas (plastic); however, the grains are prone to
being mixed with stones and grains since the grains are laid out on the
pavement to dry. Also a tool is needed to mix the grains from time to time.
