ACTIVITY 2

1. What are the two important goals of social studies? Briefly discuss each by providing
concrete examples.

The first important goal of social studies is to foster social understanding by

encouraging individuals to appreciate and respect diverse cultures. For instance, understanding
the culture of the Ilocano indigenous people. The Ilocano community has rich traditions, culture
and beliefs like their traditional practice “Atang” that gives meaning in remembering the
departed loved ones. By learning about and respecting these traditions, individuals can develop
social understanding and cultural awareness. By studying different cultures, individuals can gain
a better understanding of the world's diversity and respect for others and which in turn
encourages critical thinking. This goal is essential because it promotes inclusivity and harmony
in a multicultural society. Understanding and appreciating diverse cultures can help prevent
stereotypes and discrimination, fostering a more cohesive and accepting community.

The second important goal of social studies is to promote civic engagement. Civic
engagement refers to the active participation of individuals in their communities and in the
political process. Social studies help students understand the rights and responsibilities of
citizenship, as well as the importance of being informed and engaged members of society. One
concrete example of promoting civic engagement in social studies is through service-learning
projects. Service-learning projects allow students to apply their knowledge and skills to real-
world issues in their community. For instance, a social studies class may partner with a local
organization to address homelessness or environmental sustainability. Through these projects,
students not only learn about the social issues affecting their community, but also develop a
sense of social responsibility and the importance of taking action to create positive change.

2. In not more than 100 words, answer the inquiry below:

Many school subjects in the intermediate grades comprise knowledge and skills, but social
studies emphasize attitudes and values, too. How are they different, and why are both
important?

 School subjects in the intermediate grades focus on imparting knowledge and skills to
students, but social studies stand out by also emphasizing attitudes and values. While
subjects like math and science teach concrete concepts, social studies help students
develop empathy, critical thinking, and a sense of social responsibility. This is crucial in
shaping well-rounded individuals who can navigate a diverse and complex world. By
incorporating attitudes and values, social studies encourage students to consider different
perspectives, make ethical decisions, and become active citizens in society. Thus, both
knowledge/skills and attitudes/values are important for holistic education and personal
development.
