Biochemically Important Monosaccharides
Biochemically Important Monosaccharides
Monosaccharides
Of the many monosaccharides, there
are six monosaccharides that are
important in the functioning of the
human body.
Trioses (D-glyceraldehyde and D
dihydroxyacetone)
D-glucose
D-galactose
D-fructose
D-Ribose
Trioses (D-glyceraldehyde and D-
dihydroxyacetone)
These two trioses are important
intermediates in the process of
glycolysis.
D-glucose
Of all monosaccharides, D glucose is
the most abundant in nature and the
most important from a human
nutritional standpoint.
Ripe fruits particularly ripe grapes
(20%-30% glucose by mass) are good
source of glucose.
D-GALACTOSE
It is called brain sugar – it is
component of glycoproteins
(carbohydrates- proteins compounds)
that is found in the brain and nerve
proteins.
It is also present in chemical markers
that distinguish various types of blood
– A ,B, AB, O.
D-FRUCTOSE
Also known as fruit sugar/LEVULOSE
It is the sweetest of all sugars
D-RIBOSE
is a component of a variety of complex
molecules including the
Part of RNA,, Part of ATP and Part of
DNA
