Biochemically Important

Monosaccharides
 Of the many monosaccharides, there
are six monosaccharides that are
important in the functioning of the
human body.
 Trioses (D-glyceraldehyde and D
dihydroxyacetone)
 D-glucose
 D-galactose
 D-fructose
 D-Ribose
Trioses (D-glyceraldehyde and D-
dihydroxyacetone)
 These two trioses are important
intermediates in the process of
glycolysis.
D-glucose
 Of all monosaccharides, D glucose is
the most abundant in nature and the
most important from a human
nutritional standpoint.
 Ripe fruits particularly ripe grapes
(20%-30% glucose by mass) are good
source of glucose.
D-GALACTOSE
 It is called brain sugar – it is
component of glycoproteins
(carbohydrates- proteins compounds)
that is found in the brain and nerve
proteins.
 It is also present in chemical markers
that distinguish various types of blood
– A ,B, AB, O.
D-FRUCTOSE
 Also known as fruit sugar/LEVULOSE
 It is the sweetest of all sugars
D-RIBOSE
 is a component of a variety of complex
molecules including the
 Part of RNA,, Part of ATP and Part of
DNA
