Lesson Using Adverbs in Making Comparisons

3

What I Need to Know

• Form adverbs in the three degrees of comparison.
• Use the degrees of comparison of adverbs.

Directions: Write the kind of the underlined adverb.

__________5. Ellen truly understood the situation and forgave one another.

What’s New
Read the short dialog below and answer the questions that follow.

A Debate

The Grade VI class of Mrs. Mercado had just had a

debate in their online English class. They are resolving
the the issue of using expensive advertisements and materials
in the election campaigns of government officials.

Debater 1: I strongly believe that a good candidate with an excellent moral

standing, a fairly well track record, and the necessary
qualifications does not need to spend millions to be able to win.
He or she can simply present himself or herself as what he or
she really is together with the programs and plans of actions to
execute in order to serve his or her constituents well. The use of

8
expensive ads and materials is, therefore, not necessary. These
are just expensive expenditures and should not be allowed by
law.
Debater 2: For me, a candidate not known by the voters will not get enough
votes to win. Voters come from all over the country. Campaigning
once in any district or region is not enough. There is a need for
a variety of ways to reach out to people to win their votes. Having
a TV ad or using posters can work more effectively in making
one’s track record known.
Moderator: Debater 2 has spoken as intelligently as the first debater. Now
that we heard both sides, we will leave the decision to the
audience to choose which side is more validly accepted.
After dismissal, the boys and girls continued discussing the issue on
political ads. Aside from learning how to participate in a debate, they also
learned how to discuss their arguments in a proper way.
Healthy discussions are carried out with polite words and soft voices.
People can present opposing views and opinions without ending up in
heated arguments.

Questions:
1. What is the activity of the Grade VI online English class of Mrs. Mercado?
2. What issue is being resolved?
3. How should we discuss issues even when we have opposing views?

The underlined words in the dialog are used to compare how an act is performed. This
is what we call the degrees of comparison of adverbs.

Degrees of Comparison of Adverbs

POSITIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE
- two or more actions are - three or more actions are
- no comparison
compared compared
EXAMPLES
Public servants work Public servants work Public servants work the
hard. harder doing field work hardest when doing both
than doing paperwork. field work and paperwork.
He served the constituents He served the constituents
more effectively than his the most effectively among
father. the family members.
He served his
constituents effectively.
He served the constituents He served the constituents
less effectively than his the least effectively among
father. the family members.

Here are some rules in using adverbs in making comparisons:

Use the base form for the positive degree.
Add -er to the adverb in the comparative degree and -est in the superlative degree.
For adverbs with two syllables and more, add more or less in the comparative
degree and most or least in the superlative degree.

9
Change the spelling of irregular adverbs:
well – better – best
badly – worse – worst
Use the expression as + adverb + as to show comparisons that are of equal degree.
She cooks as deliciously as her mother.

Adverbs can be used in making comparisons.

The three degrees of comparison of adverbs are: positive, comparative
and superlative.

pool if he will try (hard)________ than before.
