Independent Learning What if the independent or modular learning will remain longer
throughout the pandemic or much longer, would the students learn as much as they learn at
school during f2f classes? Isn't it necessary for students to have guidance for their lessons and
questions? Ever since the pandemic started this is the reality that students and teachers are
facing. Students can't go to school because of the risk of being infected so the best reason for
them is to stay at home. That's why the DepEd provided an alternative learning system which
one of them is independent learning. But is it really the best and perfect solution? No. Its not,
there are also students who are incapable of studying on their own and some that doesn't have
any desire for studying anymore so they make others do it for them. Needless to say the
distractions at home like the gadgets, the technologies, the games and the social media. These are
also the factors that affects the students in the independent learning. According to the study of
psychosocial support and childrens right resource center(PSTCRRC) 33% of the students who
participated in the survey says that there is no place to learn like the school. While 67% says that
they found it challenging to understand what is written in their modules. Judging from their
opinions, most of them found it hard to adjust to the independent learning that's whythose 67%
students must have a hard time answering their modules without any guidance from teachers.
Some students has parents who can help them with their modules, but what about those who
have not because not all parents too can read or write. And as a result, students will only leave
blanks on their papers showing that they had learned nothing. Imagine, you have a friend who
isn't really capable of the independent learning. One day that friend asked you to send answers
because he told you that he finds it really hard to understand and comprehend the writings on
your lessons. And so you sent your answer that you studied really hard to him. But what is the
difference? It's you who studied it and you learned something but what about your friend? What
will he understand from your module aside from the one your he copied? Nothing. Who would
know aside from you two that you two shared answers. No one will know unless it was checked
properly . So technically, students consider that it might be okay for them to copy each others
answers or that teachers would just tolerate their behaviour. This affects their mindset from being
honest students to being a cheater. Perhaps the most devastating fact about the independent
learning is that the students have their freedom on what they want to do. It's a good thing, having
your freedom is also good but they waste their time on internets and games. They neglect their
responsibilities as students and take it for granted not knowing that their future relies on how
they do well today. Some says that independent learning is also helpful to students as it molds
their ability to be independent and be responsible. However, not students are too passionate for
individual learning. Majority of the students prefer face-to-face classes than modular learning
because they find the doing of modules boring and hard. So if this is the way students are
studying these days, what will they learn for their future? If there would be no face-to-face how
would the students gain experience for their professions, would the future professionals be less
experienced or less competent? It will make big impact on our economy and our country in the
future. Therefore, being on independent learning is much harder than the face-to-face classes.
That's why we must do our best to help get everything back to normal because cooperation is a
strongest way to fight back. For a brighter future of our future doctors, teachers, chefs, police,
soldiers, and future armies, they must have the best or if not the best, atleast the most conductive
and comfortable learning areas for them to cultivate their personality, their strengths, their goals
and dreams. "Youths are the hope of our country" quoted by Dr. Jose Rizal. If we dont invest to
our learners, then we wont have any gains for succesful people in our future world.
