CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The research approach that was used to gather the data relevant to the research
concerns is the major topic of discussion in this chapter. The framework for conducting and
basing the research is provided by this methodological process. In this section, the research
instruments and methodology are chosen, and the rationale and suitability of the selections
are also discussed to improve comprehension and study implementation.

RESEARCH DESIGN

In order to address the research questions, the researcher used a causal research
design, which offers a thorough explanation of the study, in conjunction with a qualitative
approach. As a result, this specific design was taken into consideration because the study's
focus was on examining and determining how student athletes' participation in sports affected
their academic achievement.

To further do the study justice, the study was presented in a qualitative, narrative
manner throughout.

SOURCES OF DATA

The researcher collected the primary data from the respondents, which were secured
from the formulated survey questionnaire. Wherefore, 45 total respondents participated in the
study to augment the data for a more well-grounded database.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The target population of the study was from the following schools: Ragan Sur
National High School, San Antonio National High School, Delfin Albano Magsaysay Stand-
Alone Senior High School and Magsaysay Memorial High School, which respondents were
randomly selected. The study was limited to only 45 respondents wherefore, 10 samples in
Ragan Sur National High School, 10 bona fide student-athletes in San Antonio National High
School, 10 respondents in Delfin Albano Magsaysay Stand-Alone Senior High School and 15

samples in Magsaysay Memorial High School were selected to answer the questionnaire
honestly and completely.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The main instrument for gathering data in the study was a modified survey
questionnaire, enhanced with the guidance and assistance of the research teacher and some
assigned advisers. In addition, systematic random sampling was used in selecting the
respondents of the study. Apparently, the chosen tool is the most convenient and common
instrument in the affective domain to construct. Thus, the survey questionnaire in the study
range from ten (10) or more statements per research question in regards with (1) factors that
affect the academic performance of the athletes (2) find out the specific problem that the
student-athletes encounter and (3) assess how student-athletes’ practice affects their academic
performance (4) to identify the sports that student-athletes prefer to play. These statements
aimed to identify the effects of athletic participation on the academic performance of student-
athletes within the municipality of Delfin Albano, Isabela.

VALIDATION

A validation phase was observed by the researcher to check the validity of the
research instruments used. As soon as the researcher presented the research instrument to be
utilized for the study, majority of the research advisers immediately recommended to use a 4-
point scale (Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, Definitely Disagree) and 4-point likert scale
(Always, Often, Sometimes, Never) rather than a 2-point scale (yes and no) in the checklist
and survey questionnaire. Additionally, the advisers rectified some faulty word choices or
inappropriate terms used in the study. Nevertheless, recommendations made during the
validation phase were satisfactorily noted and applied for the enhancement and efficiency of
the research work.

The validated questionnaire were administered to the respondents effectively after the
permission was authoritatively signed, and was retrieved as soon as possible.

DATA ADMINISTRATION

Upon approval of the Practical Research teacher, Mrs. Engracia R. Fiesta and the
Research advisers, as well as the permission from the Office of the Principal, arrangement in
regard to the schedule of data gathering was made. Before the administration of the
questionnaire to the selected participants, their consent to participate in the study was
prioritized. It was ensured that they were sufficiently knowledgeable that their nature of
participation was voluntary, and that all information that they would disclose was treated with
utmost confidentiality. As soon as the participants had given their consent to participate in
the study, the prepared questionnaire were administered for them to accomplish. The
researchers personally administered the questionnaire to the 45 respondents at Ragan Sur
National High School, San Antonio National High School, Delfin Albano Magsaysay Stand-
Alone Senior High School and Magsaysay Memorial High School in accordance with the
planned schedule. Each respondent was given an adequate amount of time to answer it. The
data gathering phase lasted for 5 days starting from Monday, 5th of February 2024 to Friday,
9th of February 2024. Upon answering, the respondents’ responses were then encoded and
tallied in a prepared data sheet for data analysis.

STATISTICAL TOOLS

We used frequency counts, percentage distributions, weighted means, and ranking in

conjunction with causal statistics to interpret and analyze the collected data. Additionally,
appropriate table and figure types were employed to guarantee comprehensibility and clarity
in the findings' presentation.

For the purpose of describing student’s response, the likert scale was used:
