CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

The transition from high school to the next stage of life is a significant milestone for students.
During this period, they make important decisions that shape their future career paths. One of
the crucial decisions they face is choosing a career. Gender has been identified as a significant
factor that influences career decision-making. This study aims to conduct a gender-based
analysis of career decision-making among senior high school students, comparing the
decision-making processes of male and female students.

Background of the Study

In today's world, choosing a career has become a significant milestone for students, particularly
during their senior high school years. The decision they make at this stage can have a lasting
impact on their future. However, many factors can influence the career choices they make,
including traditional gender roles and stereotypes.

Societal norms and expectations have long influenced the types of jobs that men and women
are expected to pursue. For instance, some professions are still perceived as more suitable for
men, while others are considered more appropriate for women. This can lead to disparities in
career choices between genders and limit opportunities for some individuals.

To address these disparities and promote gender equality in the labor market, it is essential to
understand the influence of gender on career decision-making. This is precisely what this study
aims to achieve. It seeks to analyze how gender affects the career choices of senior high school
students, comparing the decision-making processes of male and female students. Ultimately,
the goal is to ensure that students are empowered to make informed decisions about their future
careers, regardless of their gender.

Statement of the Problem

In the context of career decision-making among senior high school students, gender plays a
significant role in shaping the choices they make. However, there is a need to further explore
and understand the specific ways in which gender influences their career decision-making
processes. This study aims to address the following questions:

1. How does gender influence career decision-making among senior high school students?

2. What are the similarities and differences in career decision-making between male and female
students?

3. Are there any specific challenges or barriers that boys or girls face when making career
decisions?

By exploring these questions, we hope to gain a better understanding of how gender impacts
career decision-making among senior high school students.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope of this study focuses on conducting a gender-based analysis of career

decision-making among senior high school students specifically in Nancapian National High
School. It aims to compare the decision-making processes between male and female students
within this specific school setting.

The study will involve gathering data from senior high school students at Nancapian National
High School, both male and female, through surveys. It will explore various factors that
influence career decision-making, such as personal interests, abilities, values, and societal
influences, within the context of this particular school.

However, it is important to note the delimitations of this study. Firstly, the research will be limited
to senior high school students at Nancapian National High School and may not be
representative of other schools or regions. The findings may not be applicable to senior high
school students in different contexts.

Additionally, the study will focus on the influence of gender on career decision-making and will
not consider other factors such as socio-economic status, family background, or cultural
differences. The research will also be limited by the sample size and the specific senior high
school selected for data collection.

5
Significance of the Study

The study will delve into the differences and similarities between how male and female senior
high school students make their career choices. By analyzing these decision-making processes,
the study aims to provide valuable insights into the impact of gender on career decision-making.
These insights could be particularly useful for educators, career counselors, and policymakers
who are interested in promoting gender equality in the labor market. With a better understanding
of the factors that influence career choices among senior high school students, the goal is to
empower students to make informed decisions about their future careers, regardless of their
gender.

CHAPTER 2
Review Related Literature

The career decision-making process for senior high school students involves various factors
such as personal interests, academic performance, and family expectations. Gender plays a
significant role in career choices, with research indicating that men and women often have
different preferences for technical versus social science and humanities fields.

Academic performance influences career decisions, with students excelling in certain subjects
more likely to pursue related careers. Conversely, those struggling may be discouraged even if
they have a genuine passion. Career guidance programs aim to empower students by providing
tools to explore diverse options.

In the Philippines, the K to 12 Program addresses unemployment and job mismatch,

emphasizing career guidance during Career Guidance Week for Grade 10 students. A study
recommends school guidance counselors offer counseling to raise awareness of career paths
and influencing factors (Digamon & De La Pena, 2021b).

A study found positive attitudes towards career decision-making, but significant age and
gender-based perception differences. Awareness of the need to make career decisions
correlated with better decision-making (Puebla, 2022). Parental influence is crucial, with males
often more decisive and lower-income families having fixed career choices (Digamon & De La
Pena, 2021b; Puebla, 2022).

Another study assessed career preferences and factors influencing choices in a Catholic school
in Antique, emphasizing the importance of careful career planning during the challenging
teenage years. Demographic factors were considered, seeking correlations between
preferences and influencing factors (Dangoy & Madrigal, 2020). Overall, career decision-making
significantly impacts students' futures (Puebla, 2022; Dangoy & Madrigal, 2020).

CHAPTER 3
Methodology

Research Design:

The research design for this study is a comparative design, which aims to compare the career
decision-making processes between male and female senior high school students. By
comparing the experiences and factors influencing career decision-making among different
genders, we can gain insights into potential gender-based disparities or similarities in career
aspirations and decision-making factors.

Data Collection:

To gather data for this study, a survey method will be employed. Surveys are an effective way to
collect quantitative data from a large sample of participants, allowing for standardized
responses and efficient data analysis.

The survey will be designed to capture information related to career aspirations,

decision-making factors, and perceptions of gender-related influences.
