Activity 3.1: Prism and Cylinder

1. A rectangular prism has a volume of 2400 𝑚𝑚3 and a height of 48 𝑚𝑚. What is the area of the base of
the prism?

Solution:
𝑉 =𝐵×ℎ
𝑉
𝐵=

2400 𝑚𝑚3
𝐵=
48 𝑚𝑚
𝐵 = 50 𝑚𝑚2

Answer: The area of the base of the prism is 50 mm2.

2. Find the volume of the prism below.

8m
3m
𝑚

6m
𝑚

Solution:
𝐵 =𝐿×𝑊
𝑉 =𝐵×ℎ
𝑉 = 𝐿×𝑊×ℎ
𝑉 = 8𝑚 × 3𝑚 × 6𝑚
𝑉 = 144 𝑚3

Answer: The volume of the prism is 144 m3.

3. How many cubic centimetres of stuffing are needed to fill a
cylindrical bean bag, which measures 30cm from the centre to the 20cm
edge, and stands 20cm high?
30cm

Solution:
𝑉 = 𝜋𝑟 2 ℎ
𝑉 = 𝜋(30𝑐𝑚)2 (20𝑐𝑚)
𝑉 = 18000𝜋 𝑐𝑚3
𝑉 ≈ 56548.67 𝑐𝑚3

Answer: Approximately 56548.67 cubic centimetres of stuffing are needed to fill the cylindrical bean
bag.

4. Find the surface area of this 3-D figure. List all formulas you use, and show all your work.

Solution:
Surface area of the cylinder at the top, 𝑆𝐴1 :
𝑆𝐴1 = 𝐵 + 𝐿𝑆𝐴
𝑆𝐴1 = 𝜋𝑟 2 + 2𝜋𝑟ℎ
𝑆𝐴1 = 𝜋(2 𝑓𝑡. )2 + 2𝜋(2 𝑓𝑡. )(6 𝑓𝑡. )
𝑆𝐴1 = 28𝜋 𝑓𝑡.2
Surface area of the cylinder at the bottom, 𝑆𝐴2 = 𝑆𝐴1 = 28𝜋 𝑓𝑡.2
Surface area of the prism without holes:
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝐵 + 𝐿𝑆𝐴
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝐿𝑊 + 𝑃𝑒
𝑆𝐴 = 2𝐿𝑊 + (2𝐿 + 2𝑊)ℎ
𝑆𝐴 = 2(19 𝑓𝑡. )(9 𝑓𝑡. ) + [2(19 𝑓𝑡. ) + 2(9 𝑓𝑡. )](6 𝑓𝑡. )
𝑆𝐴 = 678 𝑓𝑡.2
Surface area of the prism minus the holes, 𝑆𝐴3 :
Hole = area of the base of the cylinder = B = 𝜋𝑟 2
𝑆𝐴3 = 𝑆𝐴 − 2𝐵
𝑆𝐴3 = 𝑆𝐴 − 2𝜋𝑟 2
𝑆𝐴3 = 678 𝑓𝑡.2 − 2𝜋(2 𝑓𝑡. )2
𝑆𝐴3 ≈ 652.87 𝑓𝑡.2
Total surface area of the figure:
𝑇𝑆𝐴 = 𝑆𝐴1 + 𝑆𝐴2 + 𝑆𝐴3 ≈ 28𝜋 𝑓𝑡.2 + 28𝜋 𝑓𝑡.2 + 652.87 𝑓𝑡.2 ≈ 828.80 𝑓𝑡.2

Answer: The surface area of the 3-D figure is approximately 828.80 ft.2.
