1 2 Feature Group Indicators

Numerous changes were made in this chapter.

3 This chapter provides an overview of how to change the FGI bit using an EFS file.

4 2.1 FGI bits supported by UE

5 The UE transmits the FGI bits in the UE Capability Information message as shown below.

8 NOTE: If any bit in Rel 8 FGI is disabled, care should be taken to disable all its dependent bits in Rel 9
9 and Rel 10, if any. For example, as stated in [S1] (excerpt below), FGI bit 34 is dependent on
10 FGI 5 and FGI 23.

12 2.2 FGI EFS file

13 For FDD to change the FGI value (FGI bits 1 to 32) using the EFS method, an EFS file named fgi
14 can be used in the EFS of the device. The EFS should be put in the path
15 /nv/item_files/modem/lte/rrc/cap/.
16 To change the FGI value (FGI bits 33 to 64), an EFS file named fgi_rel9 can be used in the path
17 /nv/item_files/modem/lte/rrc/cap/. To change the FGI value (FGI bits 101 to 132), an EFS file
18 named fgi_r10 can be used in the path /nv/item_files/modem/lte/rrc/cap/.
19 In this way, the features advertised by the UE can be altered.

20 NOTE: Values reflected below are at the byte level.

21  For example, if the UE is sending:

22

23 '0100 0110 0000 0101 0001 1000 0000 0000'B

24 46 05 18 00
25

26 The actual value that must go into the EFS file is 00 18 05 46.

Feature Group Indicators

1  If FGI bit 16 must be disabled:

2

3 '0100 0110 0000 0100 0001 1000 0000 0000'B

4 46 04 18 00
5

6 In this case, the value that must go into the EFS file is 00 18 04 46.
7  If bits 4, 5, and 17 must be changed to 1, the new FGI bit would be:
8

9 0101 1110 0000 0101 1001 1000 0000 0000

10 5E 05 98 00
11

12 Now the value that must go into the EFS file is 00 98 05 5E.

13 NOTE: If the UE does not support a certain feature, enabling the FGI bit through the EFS file is not
14 possible.

15 2.3 TDD FGI EFS file

16 For TDD using QTI chipsets MSM8974 and MDM9625 (Dime 1.0 software), there will be
17 separate FGI EFS files. The equivalent TDD-specific EFS files for fgi, fgi_rel9, and fgi_rel10
18 identified in Section 2.2 are fgi_tdd, fgi_tdd_rel9, and fgi_tdd_rel10, which must be copied at the
19 same location given above (/nv/item_files/modem/lte/rrc/cap/).
20 For TDD using MDM9615 and MSM8960 chipsets, use the EFS files identified in Section 2.2.

21 2.4 FGI EFS file function

22 To determine what can be enabled or disabled, contents read from the FGI EFS file are ANDed
23 with the bit mask defined in file lte_as.h. Any bit that is FALSE in lte_as.h cannot be controlled,
24 i.e., enabled, using the FGI EFS file. Basically, the lte_as.h file controls what EFS bits can be
25 enabled. Thus, when the hex provided through EFS is ANDed with a bit mask generated on the
26 basis of TRUE(1)/FALSE(0) marked in lte_as.h, the UE will get a bit mask that the user wants to
27 enable and the software supports.
28 The following F3 messages can be used to determine what is being read from EFS and what is the
29 outcome of the ANDing procedure:
30

31 00:00:04.265 lte_rrc_capabilities.c 02021 CAP: Read FGI bits from EFS:

32 1577424896
33 00:00:04.284 lte_rrc_capabilities.c 00304 CAP: FeatureGroupIndicator word =
34 0x5e059800
35 00:00:04.284 lte_rrc_capabilities.c 02026 CAP: Read FGI bits from lte_as.h
36 defaults: 1577424896

37 2.5 Conclusion
38 Users should take care to understand the impact of changing any FGI items, because doing so can
39 lead to undesirable effects.
