A2 (i) In lathes DC shunt motor is used because DC shunt motor is a constant speed motor,
whenever load is increased there is only slight fall the speed. Also the torque increases
linearly with increase in load. This characteristics is most suitable for lathe application
as increase in load should increase the torque.
DC series motor usage is not possible because, DC motor has certain disadvantages
that it should never start without load. If started without load it will lead to high damage
to the commutator segment.
Due to low resistance in armature winding the current flowing through the armature is
greater than the field current.

B - Over load release coil
A - No voltage coil.
C - Spring
D - Studs
A3 (i) Field control method is not suitable because the field part is made of permanent
magnet. Only armature control is possible.
(ii) Toys and tooth brush are light loads but the cranes and hoist are heavy duty loads. As
the torque of the machine depends on field flux in order to improve the torque the
permanent magnet is replaced by electro magnet.
(iii) (i) Motor is not rotating properly because of the damage of the commutator
segment.
(ii) Commutator segment should be replaced.
(iii) Commutator segment should be serviced

B1 (i) a) Based on the magnetic property the CRGO steel has high residual flux density.
Hence the current required to produce the flux can be reduced.
b) In order to reduce the hysteresis losses the CRGO plates are used.
