Understanding Design Thinking
through this case. . .
MIT Walker Video Case Link

https://youtu.be/9fJVgJIpbJs
The Case is starting with a Design Challenge – Redesigning the Elderly
Walker

HOWEVER our Design Thinking Project, will start by finding

Problem and or Possibility from the Real World Scenario,
i.e., from the Organization/Company that you have selected.

Reason : In an organization sometime you are given a problem / possibility

to resolve AND sometimes we have to find it ourselves
Q.1. Upon seeing the Walker on the table : One of them immediately started
visualizing
what his Grandma used to do with the walker
________________________________________________________________

Q.2. Trend: There is a Shift in who composes this market

Baby boom generation started turning age 65, about 5 years ago
________________________________________________________________

Q.3 What was the Planning of the redesign process:

• Moving towards the information gathering stage
• Try to soak ourselves in this
• Dig into a lot of assumptions and prove it or disapprove it
• We will have More questions rather than answers
• Explore the problem
• Talk to stakeholders we just mapped
• And see what we uncover

by trying it themselves
Q.4. They are trying to understand how the walker works_____________________
Q.1. To start the redesigning process of the Walker, they began by
reviewing the existing walkers
___________________________and seeing it from user’s point of view.
____________________________.
Secondary Research
And this process is called ___________________

Q.2. What did they do after completing the secondary research?

(answer in points)
• Data collected is put up on a huge softboard
• Data put in form of images, texts, diagrams
• They are trying to create an understanding about the walkers
from the data collected
• Finding patterns from the data
Q.1. What do we do with the people who use the walker?
talk, ___________,
We ____, interview, _________
observe and __________
empathize.
into their world and ______________________This
We try to get ______________ see it through their eyes. process is called
User Research
_______________________

Q.2. Who are they interviewing & what unique observation did you found in the
video?
• Actual User : Susan Marsh & Paul C Miller – two Senior citizens,
• Unique obs. –walker was being transported to a different place through the car,
but it was not fitting inside the car

Interviews helps us develop __________

Q.3. __________ Empathy for the people we are trying to
understand

Q.4. What another category of interviews did they conduct after User Research?
Stakeholder Research
Q.5. Why did they interviewed other Stakeholders?
human centered approach
Q.6. DT is a _______________________

Q.7. What is Empathy?

Truly connecting with the people we are
trying to serve, trying to understand them at
an emotional level and what’s going in their
lives and what really matters to them
Q.1. What are they doing after the User & Stakeholder Research? Research review
______________

Q.2. Through analysis patterns

_______of the interviews ________emerge that uncover meaningful
insights opportunity
_______and form the __________

Q.3. By creating Personas

________ of the people interviewed, the team paints the picture of how
the walker fits into their lives
____ and maps journeyover time
_____their ______

Q.4. Key attributes

_____________are looked upon from the data collected through the Interviews

Q.5. Having clearly articulated

_________ our target
______ user and establishing the functional
________ and
emotional
_________ requirements for the new walker. We have identified the opportunity
__________ and have
framed it

Q.6. What is the Opportunity Framed?

Current walkers favor stability over mobility and rollators are just opposite to it. Our
product will provide mobility along with stability and we call this new product a mobilizer
Q.1. What are they doing in the video?
Concept generation through Brainstorming

Q.2. Why we do Brainstorming?

It brings fresh energy, new perspectives and thinking to the
opportunity.
We welcome the fun, cracky, creative, structured free flow that gives
everyone a chance to throw out their ideas

Q.3. What kind of brainstorming were they doing?

Group brainstorming

grouping ideas and common

Q.4. By __________ ________ themes, patterns
_________ emerges
concepts develop
and ___________
Q.5. Non hierarchical structure encourages everyone
to contribute in generating ideas. We believe creativity
thrive in free environment

Q.6. The design thinking process is all about

collaboration and working together, but focused
exploration and individual deep thinking are also
critical to the development of meaningful concepts
Q.1. We can’t expect to get right on the 1st time?

Q.2. Before falling in love with our ideas, we get physical fast by sketch
modelling

Q.3. Quick prototyping is building of the crudest of models which are great
form of experimentation. By building to learn, we are able to fail early and fail
often

Q.4. Ideas are only successful, if they work for the people who use them

Q.5. By testing we learn from our users and incorporate their feedback into
our designs. Getting feedback is critical to understanding that where they see
the real value. We test to learn and improve ideas and we are not testing to
see which one wins
Designs are assessed for desirability
by testing with real customers Then Viability looks at
the value proposition
from the business
perspective, by analyzing
the estimates of the
cost, such as engineering
, tooling an production
expenses as well as
estimates of the revenue
from the product’s sales
and service. We build the
Business Model for each
product offering. This
Feasibility is checked lets us assess which
by engineers through ones maybe viable from
analysis and business perspective.
prototyping – which
tech / technique is
feasible
Desirability (Do they) is about understanding you
stakeholder,
– what motivates them,
– how they engage with you / company
– what makes or breaks a positive decision

We need to be desirable to our stakeholders, or else

we’ll have no growth
Feasibility (Can we) is about how you make everything happen
behind the scenes. This includes the,
– right technology,
– hiring the right people,
– using the right tools,
– working with the right partners, and
– focusing on the right set of core activities.

We need to run in a way that’s constantly feasible, or else we’ll

implode.
Viability (Should We?) is about the Money / Impact:
– How many we earn and how many we spend. No matter
your legal structure, you’ll need a surplus to survive –
meaning there’s money left over at the end of the day.

We need to be financially viable and have a positive

impact, or else we’ll go bankrupt / not be successful
Q.1. Creating a proof of concept model, identifies the technical
problems.

Q.2. The devil is in the details of the execution, fine tuning the
details is the key to deliver innovation that would be both scalable
and valuable. This stage of prototype is called alpha prototype

Q.3. Fabricating parts makes the design a reality, bringing shape

to the new, you feel it in your hands, but also on your heart and in
your head as well.

Q.4. What they did after the final alpha prototype was created?
Customer Review
What do you understand
by this diagram?
Which are the Stages
of Design Thinking Process
We will follow a linear approach BUT when you do the project you
may have to move iteratively back and forth in different phases at
different time of your project.
STAGE 1 - Understand
Goal : Gather Information, Soak Ourselves
Task 1:
