New tool and procedure to set the maximum fuel January 1998
adjustment

The governor mechanism and linkage is contained

within the timing case. The maximum fuel adjustment
is mounted on the timing case. If a timing case is
removed or renewed, or if the cylinder block is
renewed, the correct setting for the maximum fuel can 1
be lost.
To ensure that the maximum fuel is set correctly, a 3
reference setting is necessary before the timing case
is removed and this setting must be used when the
original or the new timing case is fitted to the engine.
2
A new tool has been introduced to ensure that the
setting of the maximum fuel adjustment is correct.
The earlier tool kit has been withdrawn and its part A
number has been given to a clamp that was in the kit.
The new tool, part number 27610089, and the clamp,
part number 27160018, supersede the kit. Both tools
are available from Irlam.
The procedure in this bulletin supersedes the
1
procedures 20A-11 and 20A-11A in the Workshop
Manual, publication number TPD 1359E Issue 1
section 20.

Note: Some engines are fitted with an induction
manifold that is close to the fuel injection pump. The
removal of the pump can be difficult if this manifold is
fitted. Therefore, the manifold should be removed at
the start of the operation.
1 Disconnect and remove the return spring from the
engine speed control lever.
Caution: Ensure that the components behind the 'D'
plug are not damaged.
2 Remove the 'D' plug (A2) from the timing case (A1).
3 Remove the access plate (B1) from the cylinder
block.

4 Put the clamp (A1) into the timing case such that
the end (A2) of the clamp points downwards. 1
5 When the end of the clamp is entered far into the
timing case, rotate the tool counter-clockwise 90°
(A5) to engage the lever (A3). The end of the clamp
should now be behind the lever.
3 2
6 Tighten the adjustment screw (A4), finger tight, to
hold together the two levers (A6 and A7). To ensure
that the tool has held both the levers, move the tool
backwards and forwards. The peg (B2) on the fuel
control rack should move with the tool. Ensure that 6
the sides of the clamp do not touch the bore (A1 on
4
page 1) for the 'D' plug. 5 7
A
7 Remove the low-pressure fuel pipes from the fuel
filter assembly.
1 3
8 Remove the electrical stop solenoid. Ensure that
the joint is removed.
9 Remove the spring (B1) from the peg.
Caution: When the spring (B3) is disconnected from 2
the peg (B2), it is possible for the spring to become
disconnected from the pin (B4). If this occurs, the
spring can fall into the sump! 4 6
10 Remove the spring (B3) from the peg. Remove the
control link (B5) from the peg.
11 Remove the fuel injection pump (C).
5 7
12 Remove the shim (C1) from the fuel pump B
housing.
13 Remove the stud (C5) from the fuel pump
housing. Clean the flange face of the fuel pump
housing. 1 2

14 Put the tool (A1) into position on the two dowels in

the fuel pump housing; the adjustment rod (A2) of the
tool enters the pump housing through the hole for the 1
stop solenoid. Fit the two setscrews and tighten them
to secure the tool to the fuel pump housing.
15 Put the peg (B3) on the end of the adjustment rod
into the hole in the control link (B2). Fit the spring (B1)
to the peg.
16 Rotate the adjustment knob (C1) counter- 2
clockwise slowly until the control link is just in tension.
17 Ensure that the setting ring (C3) is apart from the
locking ring (C4). Check that the control link is still in
tension. With the setting plate (C2) flat against the A
rear face of the tool, adjust the setting ring to obtain a
good fit between the setting ring and the setting plate;
like a feeler gauge. 1
Note: Always ensure that the control link remains in
tension.
18 When the fit between the setting plate and the
setting ring is correct, keep pressure on the
adjustment knob (D1) to retain tension on the control
link. Use the locking ring (D2) to lock the setting ring 3
(D3). Check that the setting is still correct. If it is not 2
correct, repeat the procedure from step 17 until the
adjustment is correct. The maximum fuel reference is
now set. Carefully remove the setting plate.
19 Carefully rotate the adjustment knob clockwise B
approximately 1/4 turn to release the tension on the
control link. Disconnect the control link from the
adjustment rod. Ensure that the setting is not lost.
Remove the clamp from the timing case. Remove the
timing case. 2

20 Release the two setscrews and carefully remove

the tool from the fuel pump housing. Ensure that the
setting is not lost as it must be used when the original
or a new timing case is fitted.
21 If the timing case is to be renewed, measure the
2
protrusion of the speed adjustment screws (A2 and
A3). This will be provide a basic setting for the new
timing case.
How to use the reference setting for maximum
fuel
3
Note: The engine should be partially built without the
fuel injection pump, but with the timing case.
1
A
1 Remove the "D" plug from the timing case, see step
2 on page 1.
2 Put the clamp in position, see steps 4, 5 and 6 on
page 2.
3 Check that the adjustment screw (A1) for the
maximum fuel adjustment protrudes approximately
25 mm (1.0 in) from the timing case. 1
4 Put the setting plate (B1) into position between the
rear face of the tool and the setting ring (B2) and with
the adjustment knob (B3) rotate the adjustment rod
clockwise to give the correct setting for the setting
plate; a feeler gauge fit. 2
5 Put the tool (A1 on page 3) into position on the two
3
dowels in the fuel pump housing; the adjustment rod B
(A2 on page 3) enters the pump housing through the
hole for the stop solenoid. Fit the two setscrews and
tighten them to secure the tool to the fuel pump
housing.
6 Put the peg (B3 on page 3) on the end of the 1
adjustment rod into the hole in the control link (B2 on
page 3). Fit the spring (B1 on page 3) to the peg of the 2
adjustment rod.
7 Release the lock nut of the maximum fuel
adjustment and rotate the adjustment screw (C1)
clockwise until finger tight. Hold the adjustment screw
with a screwdriver and tighten the lock nut (C2). The
maximum fuel adjustment is now set. Fit the cap nut
(C3) to the adjustment screw. 3

8 Check and if necessary adjust the maximum and
idle speed adjustments.

9 Carefully remove the setting plate.

10 Carefully rotate the adjustment knob clockwise
approximately 1/4 turn to release the tension on the
control link. Disconnect the spring from the peg of the
adjustment rod. Remove the control link from the
adjustment rod. Release the two setscrews and
carefully remove the tool from the fuel pump housing.
11 Remove clamp from the timing case.
12 Apply POWERPART Liquid gasket to the side
faces of a new "D" plug and fit the "D" plug.
13 Ensure that the flange face of the fuel pump
housing is clean and fit the shim for the fuel injection
pump. Refer to the workshop manual for the
procedure to fit the fuel injection pump and to rebuild
the engine.
