Conrad était sans voix. Constance hésita un moment, puis, se méprenant
sur ce silence, une joie sauvage brilla dans ses yeux; elle lui mit les bras

m’aimer! O dites que vous le voulez, mon cher, mon adoré Conrad!»
Conrad poussa un gémissement. Une pâleur mortelle envahit ses traits. Il
se mit à trembler comme une feuille de tremble. Puis, désespéré, il repoussa
la jeune fille, en criant:
«Vous ne savez pas ce que vous demandez! C’est à jamais impossible.»
Puis il s’enfuit comme un criminel, laissant la pauvre princesse muette de
stupeur. Un instant après, tandis que, restée là, elle criait et sanglotait,
Conrad criait et sanglotait dans sa chambre; tous deux étaient au désespoir.
Tous deux voyaient la ruine devant leurs yeux.
Après quelque temps, Constance se releva lentement, et s’éloigna en
disant:
«Ah! songer qu’il méprisait mon amour, au moment même où je croyais
que son cœur cruel se laissait toucher! Je le hais! Il m’a repoussée, il m’a
repoussée comme un chien!»
CHAPITRE IV
L’EFFROYABLE RÉVÉLATION
Le temps passa. La tristesse fut à nouveau gravée pour toujours sur les
traits de la fille du bon duc. On ne vit plus désormais ensemble elle et
Conrad. Le duc s’en affligea. Mais avec les semaines successives, les
couleurs revinrent aux joues de Conrad, son ancienne vivacité brilla dans ses
yeux, il continua à administrer le royaume avec une sagesse lucide et
mûrissante chaque jour.
Un bruit étrange, bientôt, se glissa dans le palais. Il grandit, et se
propagea. Les racontars de la cité le répandirent. Il pénétra dans tout le
duché. Et l’on entendait chuchoter: «La dame Constance a donné naissance à
un fils?»
Quand ce bruit parvint aux oreilles du seigneur de Klugenstein, il agita
par trois fois son casque à panache autour de sa tête, en criant:
«Longue vie au duc Conrad! Los! Sa couronne est sûre maintenant.
Detzin s’est acquitté de sa mission. Le brave scélérat a bien mérité sa
récompense!»
Il partit semer la nouvelle au large et au loin. Pendant quarante-huit
heures, il n’y eut pas une âme dans la baronnie qui ne dansât et ne chantât,
ne banquetât et n’illuminât, pour célébrer le grand événement, le tout aux
frais généreux et gais du vieux Klugenstein.

CATASTROPHE ÉPOUVANTABLE
