Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the echnology and Livelihood Education - Grade 7/8 Home Economics Alternative
Delivery Mode (ADM) Module in Dressmaking!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from public
and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning activities
at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st
century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that

will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in
the module.

What I Need to Know

CARRY 0UT MEASUREMENTS AND CALCULATIONS

In this module the learner will learn how to read measurements either in English system or
Metric system of measurements not only to read but also to learn how to measure and perform
simple calculations. This is very useful in our everyday life of living.
The lesson is made to follow the standard measures of the course.
At the end of this module the learners are expected to:
 Apply the system of measurements;
 perform simple calculations based on the job requirement;
 demonstrate accurate reading measurements.

What’s New

IMPORTANCE OF MEASUREMENTS
Measurement is important part of comparing things as they provide the basis on comparing
object to other object, without the ability to measure it would be difficult in the part of scientist,
engineers, farming, construction, manufacturing, doctors chef/cook, dressmakers/tailor and
numerous other occupation and activities. Measurements continue to play an important role
throughout everybody’s life. Measurement provides accurate, reliable and quality assurance of work
or output.

What is it

SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENTS
Simple calculation is an easy mathematical application used to determine the accurate measurement
of body parts, length and width of materials and cost needed to create an apparel.

This is the process in which the four fundamental of operations (MDAS) is involved.

In drafting pattern, taking body measurements and measuring the length and width of fabric
dressmakers/tailor used either inches or centimeters as their unit of measurements.

8
Definition of Terms

 Accuracy – the exactness of a measured distance or circumference

 Calculation – the process or an act of calculating
 Calculator – an electronic device used for speed computation
 Conversion – a change of figures like changing from centimeters to inches and vice versa
 Cost – the amount paid or charge for something that is acquired
 English System – the English system has inches for its basic unit
 Measurement – a systematic procedure of determining the quantity or extent of the entire
measurable dimension
 Metric System – a decimal system of physical units based on a unit of length known as the
meter (Greek Metron, ― measure‖)
 Centimeter- is a unit of length in the metric system that is equal to one hundredth of a meter
 Inches - an English unit of length measurement equal to 1/36 of a yard or 1/12 of a foot.

How to read your tape measure in inches

9
How to read your tape measure in centimeter

NOTE:

One yard is equivalent to 36”

One foot is equivalent to 12”

One meter is equivalent to 100 centimeters

Sample problem of computation

1. How many centimeters in 36” width of table?

Given: 36” width of the table
Calculation: 1inch = 2.54cm
36” X 2.54cm = 91.144cm
Answer: 91.144 cm
2. How many inches in 90 centimeters length of fabric?
Given: 90 centimeters length of fabric

Calculation: 2.54cm = 1 inch

90cm ÷ 2.54cm = 35.433 inches

Answer: 35.433 inches
