BASIC CONCEPTS OF VIBRATIONS

PERIODIC MOTION
Any Motion that repeats itself after a given time interval

Figure 1-1: Periodic Motion

VIBRATIONS

Vibration is the motion of a body which oscillates about a position of equilibrium.

Figure 1-2: Oscillation about a point

PERIOD
Period is the time interval to complete a full cycle

Figure 1-3: Period and Amplitude

MEE411 LECTURE NOTES 2020

FREQUENCY
The number of cycles of motion in a given time

AMPLITUDE
The maximum displacement of the system from the equilibrium position

DEGREE OF FREEDOM
This can be defined as the number of independent ways by which a dynamic
system can move after considering all constraints imposed on it.

FREE VIBRATION
Free Vibration is the Vibration of a system in which the vibration is maintained
by only the internal restoring force of the system.

DAMPED VIBRATION
As a vibrating system moves to and fro, forces of friction in bearings, wind and
other fluid drags cause the vibration to die down or die off. This process is called
damping. Vibrations can also be purposefully introduced as viscous damping.

FORCED VIBRATION.
A vibration is forced when a forcing function is applied to a vibrating system to
maintain it in the vibrating state

LONGITUDINAL VIBRATION
Vibration in which the restoring force is in the same direction as the motion of
the Vibrating Body

Figure 1-6: Longitundinal, transverse and torsional

Vibration

TRANSVERSE VIBRATION
In transverse Vibration, the body moves perpendicular to the restoring force, i.e
displacement is perpendicular to axis

TORSIONAL VIBRATION
Torsional vibration is angular vibration of a body along its axis of rotation.
