LADDERS
INTRODUCTION
Day in and day out falls from ladders remain a major source of injuries at work in construction
environments.
This is a high-hazard area that require extra attention by anyone that uses such work equipment.
Although ladders appear simple, there are rules to follow when using them.

WHY?
To prevent injury: A fall from any height normally results in some injury or another. Fatalities are not
uncommon.
To increase efficiency and productivity: Accidents no matter how small involve some cost, either in
time off the job, investigation, etc. these can even result in project delays and subsequent penalties being
imposed
To reduce losses: No one like to be injured and injuries do cost both the individual in terms of pain and
suffering and the company with regards to insurance premiums, labour replacement, retraining, etc.
To reduce the risk of prosecution: Municipality inspectors investigate accidents and where there are
unsafe working practices observed either the employer and sometimes the employee can be punished by
fines, even imprisonment.
