3. Add zero pairs
4. Add integers with the same signs
5. Add integers with different signs

II. CONTENT
Topic: Addition of Integers
Time Frame: 60mins
Learning Competency: Performs operations on integers
Strategy: Guided Discovery, Collaborative

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

References:
Other Learning Materials: Styro Board, Thumbtacks, Thread

IV. PROCEDURE
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
Checking of attendance

B. MOTIVATION
Activity: Where is The Ghost?
Story: After purchasing a weapon in the Black Market, Simon Riley aka “Ghost”
decided to raid different locations in the world of COD. The distance from one
place to another is one unit.

The students will be given a scenario indicating the ghost’s initial position and
the direction he will go. Let each group show to the class the movement of the
ghost from one place to another by moving Simon Riley’s icon on the map.
Identify the destination of the ghost after following the instructions. After each
scenario, the teacher will ask “Where is the Ghost?” and the students will
answer where the ghost’s location is.
Scenario 1: From the black market, the Ghost moved 1 unit to the right.
Scenario 2: From the Dome, the Ghost moved 3 units to the right.
Scenario 3: From the monastery, the ghost moves 4 units to the left.
Scenario 4: From the black market the ghost moves 2 units to the left.
Scenario 5: From Nuke Town, the ghost moves 2 units to the left.
Scenario 6: From Docks, move 5 units to the right.
Scenario 7: From Dome, move 4 units to the left.

C. PRESENTATION OF THE TOPIC

Represent the ghost’s movements in each scenario through addition where the
ghost’s initial position is the first addend and the number of units he moved is
the second addend. If he moved to the right, the addend will be positive and if
he moved to the left, the addend will be negative.
Scenario 1:
Black market + 1 = Dome
Scenario 2:
Dome + 3 = Monastery
Scenario 3:
Monastery + (- 4) = Black Market
Scenario 4:
Black market + (- 2) = Nuke Town
Scenario 5:
Nuke Town + (-2) = Docks
Scenario 6:
Docks + 5 = Dome
Scenario 7:
Dome + ( - 4 ) = Sanitarium

Represent each location with integers to show a number line.

Let the Black Market be 0, the locations on the right be the positive integers
and the locations on the left be the negative integers.
Replace the locations in each equation with its corresponding integers.
Scenario 1:
From: Black market + 1 = Dome
To: 0+1=1
Scenario 2:
From: Dome + 3 = Monastery
To: 1+3=4
Scenario 3:
From: Monastery + (- 4) = Black Market
To: 4+(-4)=0
Scenario 4:
From: Black market + (- 2) = Nuke Town
To: 0+(-2)=-2
Scenario 5:
From: Nuke Town + (-2) = Docks
To: -2+(-2)=(-4)
Scenario 6:
From: Docks + 5 = Dome
To: -4+5=1
Scenario 7:
Dome + ( - 4 ) = Sanitarium
1+(-4)=-3

D. LESSON PROPER
Adding 0 and another Integer
From Scenario 1 and Scenario 4, we have:

0+1=1 and

0+ (−2 )=−2
Complete the statement:
When adding 0 and another integer, the answer is _______________.
Let the learners add the following:

1. 0+6=¿
2. 0+ (−11 )=¿
3. −32+0=¿
4. 555+0=¿

Adding the Same numbers with Different Signs (Zero Pair)

From Scenario 3, we have:

4 + (−4 ) =0
Questions:
What did you notice with the addends? Are they the same numbers? Do they
have the same signs or different signs?
Two numbers that when added result to 0 are called ‘zero pair’. In a zero pair,
one integer is positive and one is negative.
Complete the statement:
When adding two the same numbers with different signs, the answer is _______.

Let the learners add the following:

1. −5+5=¿

2. 100+ (−100 )=¿

3. −999+ 999=¿

Adding Integers with the Same Signs

From Scenario 2 and Scenario 5, we have:

1+3=4 and

−2+ (−2 ) =−4

Questions:

1. In 1+3=4 , is 1 positive or negative? How about 3? How about the sum, is it

positive or negative? When you add two positive integers, is the answer positive
or negative?

2. In −2+ (−2 ) =−4 , is the first addend positive or negative? How about the
second? The sum? When you add two negative integers, is the answer positive
or negative?
Complete the statement:
When adding integers with the same signs, we _______ the numbers and
________ the signs.

Adding Integers with Different Signs

From Scenario 6 and 7, we have:

−4+5=1 and

1+ (−4 )=−3
Questions:

1. In −4+5=1, what did you notice with the signs of the addends? Are they the
same or different?
2. What operation did you use between 4 and 5 to get 1?
3. Is the sum positive or negative?
Take a look at the addends, which is farther from 0, - 4 or 5?

4. In 1+ (−4 )=−3, what did you use between 1 and 4 to get 3?

5. Is the sum positive or negative?

Take a look at the addends, which is farther from 0, 1 or – 4 ?
Complete the statement:
When adding integers with different signs, we ______________ and copy the sign
of the number (farther, nearer) from 0.
Let the learners add the following integers:

1. 16+ (−6 )=¿

2.−20+10=¿
3. 100+ (−33 )=¿
E. EXERCISES
Let the learners add the following integers.

1. 0+ (−18 )=¿

2. 1000+ (−1000 )=¿

3. 15+13=¿

4. −4+ (−4 ) =¿

5. (−5 ) +55

F. GENERALIZATION
What are the four rules in adding integers?

G. EVALUATION
Add the following integers.

1. 16+ (−5 )=¿

2. 98+ 0=¿

3.−6+ (−4 )=¿

4. 7+ (−7 )=¿

5. −1+9=¿

H. ASSIGNMENT
Given the following integers, what is the sum if you add all of them together?

12 ,−6 ,0 ,−12 ,6 , 100 ,−99
