OYO Hotels & Homes

Reasons why the topic is chosen :

Based on our research, OYO Hotels & Homes is the top 3 largest hotel chain
with over 40 000 hotels that listed across the globe. The founder was the World’s
Youngest Self-made Billionaire after Kylie Jenner in February 2020 who started to
launch the company at the age of 19 years old. We found this fact interesting on how

because of the uniqueness as the renovations match the checklist of standard
service which make it different from others. The best thing about OYO hotel is how
pocket-friendly it is that the customers can get rooms at a reasonable price with

1. INTRODUCTION

OYO Hotels & Homes that stands for ‘on your own’ is a global platform that
empowers entrepreneurs and small businesses with hotels and homes by providing full
stack technology that increases earnings and eases operations. It was launched in May
2013 by Ritesh Agarwal, a college drop-out at the mere age of 19 years old. In 2011, he
came up with the idea of Oravel Stays to start an online hotel and room booking platform
which was later transformed into OYO. Bringing affordable and trusted accommodation
that guests can book instantly is the company’s mission in order to create India’s largest
chain of standard and affordable hotels that giving the best services for its people. It was
said to begin after he realized the poor hospitality facilities that he received when he used
to travel to different places back then.
This platform is focusing on serving their customers with dependable, sanitised,
value-oriented stay experiences, which is done by simplifying booking and offering a large
range of hotel options for their customers to select from in the same neighbourhood at a
price that is in pace with their budget. Almost a decade later, OYO that synonym for
budget-friendly hotels, homes and living spaces has become phenomenal after going
international and spread its wings of operation in more than 80 countries including
Malaysia and big markets like United Kingdom, Dubai and China.
Nowadays, we can see that people are travelling more than ever before in
contemporary times which accompanied also by the advancement of technology to
create more options for corporate operation. Travellers, especially those on a tight
budget, have a tremendous need for a nice location to stay at a reasonable price and
that what was motivate Ritesh Agarwal to launch his own company which resulting
the establishment of Oravel Stays, a booking website with standardised amenities
and services in 2011. In order to create a comfortable home, OYO works with
property owners to optimise amenities and services. Until now, the OYO network has
spread in several countries such as India, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal and the
United Arab Emirates.
OYO Hotels & Homes that also known as OYO Rooms consists of 71 executives and
4 subsidiaries which is China, Middle East, United Kingdom and Vacation Homes.
There is six people with power at OYO under its organizational structure after the
Founder, Chairman or Chief Executive Officer named Ritesh Agarwal that is also the
second youngest billionaire in India.
Firstly, The Chief Financial Officer, Abishek Gupta who joined OYO in 2015 as the
company’s CFO has spent more than 9 years with General Electric across various
financial roles. He was also a Chartered Accountant and an MBA from the Indian
School of Business before associated with OYO Hotels after went overseas. Dinesh
Ramamurthi is the Chief Human Resources Officer of OYO since 2016 for driving
learning, performance management and creating positive work culture. Right before
OYO, Dinesh was leading Compensation and Benefits in the APAC Region for The
Coca-Cola Company.
This continue with Chief Technology Officer, Ankit Mathuria startup in February 2021
who has an illustrative career for over 15 years in the field of technology. Joined with
the company since 2014, Abhinav Sinha was later promoted as the Global Chief
Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer in March 2021 because of a decade of
experience working with product and services companies. Other than that, Rakesh
Prushti has been leading high stake projects, corporate governance initiatives and
best practices at OYO as General Counsel in 2018 while Vimal Chawla was given
the responsibilities of the Company Secretary of OYO in September 2020.
2. COMPANY BIGGEST CHALLENGES IN THE CURRENT AREA

 COVID-19 IMPACT
Almost every business suffered a lot due to Covid-19, OYO was not any
different. The hospitality business suffered a lot, and the occupancy rates of the
hotels slow down due to all the lockdown curbs imposed by the Government. Even
after the lockdown was over, people were being cautious and were avoiding
travelling, so naturally, the occupancy rates were not increasing. All the restrictions
created a negative impact on the revenues of the business.
 OYO SEES TRAVEL BOOKING ACCELERATE RAPIDLY
Travel bookings have already accelerated significantly, according to hotel
aggregator and owner OYO.
According to Tan Ming Luk Tan, OYO Head of Singapore Malaysia, "We find
that travel bookings have increased significantly in regions where at least 40% of the
population has received their first dosage of the vaccine in all the nations across the
world that we service."
According to recent data, VaccinAid-affiliated properties see a 220 percent
increase in occupancy and a 180 percent increase in revenue per available room
(RevPar) compared to those that are not. These properties display tags on their
websites that show their staff members have received vaccinations.
Tan claims that following Covid lockdowns, only about 15% of its rooms
throughout Malaysia and Southeast Asia have yet to reopen. In addition to health
risks for themselves, their employees, and their visitors, hotel owners also have to
deal with a shortage of staff availability, a lack of clarity regarding governmental
laws, and financial instability.
Nearly one-third of them have told OYO they want to leave the hotel industry
and go into other business ventures.
"For the remaining issues, we are assisting them by establishing sanitization
protocols, educating their staff, allowing for flexibility in pricing and commercial
arrangements to ease cash flow issues, and utilising technology to lessen reliance
on human labour, such as contactless check-in, among other things.
"As the markets reopen over the following three months, we anticipate that
roughly 50% of the properties that are currently temporarily closed will start doing
business once again. The remaining steps will take longer since property owners
would need to locate new tenants, investigate other business models for their
homes, and wait for markets to fully recover, according to Tan.
 TRAVELLERS STILL AFRAID OF INFECTION
Chin anticipates that many travellers will continue to be concerned about
contracting an infection in the future. They'll look for experiences in less populated
areas and would rather travel locally in smaller groups, which offers a lot more
flexibility.
"We employ VR technology to provide travellers with an alternate method of
learning about Malaysia's attractions and locations through 360-degree virtual tours.
In an effort to resurrect travel in 2022, we will introduce self-guided audio tours and
encourage hybrid tourism, the official stated.
Chin claimed that mobility issues have encouraged the use of the Internet as
a means of virtually travelling to sites and consulting tourist information.
We are transforming the extraordinary obstacles into numerous opportunities
as a travel technology firm that specialises in VR/AR-based digital content
development. "Pandemic provides digital uptake a significant boost," he said.
The startup, which is still in the seed stage, will concentrate on maintaining
self-sufficiency while pursuing the next round of investment.
Governments must work for political and economic stability, he said, as well
as develop a phased strategy to balance the requirements of the public and the
private sectors.
3. ETHICAL ISSUES THAT ORGANIZATION/COMPANY FACED

Each of the company or organization around the world will faced a problem
about the ethical issues of the worker itself or the services. This problem was
appointed since long time ago, this happened because the workers itself does not
fulfil the characteristic of the high-quality staff such as trustworthiness, responsible
towards the work that have been assigned it means that the workers itself have the
integrity and ethics towards the task. The definition of the ethical issues, discuss
about the principal towards behaviour of human that created conflict. The examples,
of the ethical issues that occur in the company or organization is harassment,
discrimination, health and safety of the workers. Through the definition we knew that,
ethical issues are crucial in the organization or the company.

THE OYO HOTEL EMPLOYEE AFFECTED DURING COVID-19

During the COVID-19 outbreak, all of the countries closed their borders to
prevent the outbreak from spreading. This forced all of the industries to close,
especially the tourism industry, due to the decreasing number of tourists and visitors,
which affected the revenue of the country and even the hotel business. Oyo Hotel
was also affected by COVID-19; therefore, the company has decided to reduce the
employee's salary because it is unable to pay the employee's salary.
India’s Oyo Hotel has furloughed 300 employees; during the furloughs, the
employees need to find additional jobs to support their families and themselves,
ensuring enough food and so on. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, India’s hotel
revenue in 2020 will drop by more than 50%, which will affect employee salaries.
The company announced that they did not fire their employees but minimised the
human workers to avoid any consequences during the pandemic; they even made
sure all of the employees would be provided with healthcare and medical benefits
during the furloughs. This issue not only happened in India but also in the United
States, Malaysia, and Japan.
From what happened, we learned that we could not prevent a health disaster
from spreading, and we should be grateful for the time when we could get anything
we wanted without any obstacles.
DISCRIMINATION OF THE WORKERS TOWARDS THE CUSTOMER RELIGION
Discrimination will always be the issue in society. When someone is treated
less favourably than another person in a similar circumstances simply because they
belong, or are thought to belong to, a particular group or category of individuals,
discrimination has taken place. People can be discriminated against on a number of
different grounds, including age, disability, ethnicity, origin, political beliefs, racism,
religion, sex or gender, sexual orientation, language, and culture. Discrimination,
which is frequently the result of preconceptions held by individuals, renders people
helpless, prevents them from becoming active members of society, limits their ability
to learn new skills, and, in many cases, prevents them from accessing jobs, health
services, education, or housing.
Discrimination affects the individuals and groups it targets directly, but it also
has long-lasting, indirect effects on society as a whole. This will cause a person to
have a traumatised life, in physical and mental state we could learn from the issue
that arise on September where a 24 years old Kashmir man was denied a room by a
hotel where we could see discrimination happened because his origin from Kashmir.
Which we knew that in Kashmir, the most population religion is Islam

OYO MAKES ‘SANITIZED STAYS’ PROGRAM

4. EFFORTS TAKEN BY THE LEADERSHIP IN THE OYO
ORGANISATIONS TO DEAL WITH DISCRIMINATION OF THE WORKERS
TOWARD THE CUSTOMER RELIGION

OYO Hotel offers managers and staff members of hotels a cutting-edge, interactive
training experience. Employees learn how inappropriate behaviour can affect
individuals and the entire organisation through bite-sized episodes, video scenarios
that depict realistic workplace incidents, viewer mailbag FAQs, and other elements.
They also learn what they can do to intervene, report, and prevent misconduct they
may experience or witness.

Based on discrimination that happened to Kashmir, OYO Hotel The hotel

aggregation company OYO Rooms has expressed regret after it was reported that a
Delhi hotel operated by one of its affiliates turned down a request for a room from a
man from Kashmir.

OYO Hotels stated in a statement that it was dedicated to providing high-quality

living experiences to all of its visitors, regardless of their race, religion, national
origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender, marital status, age, etc.

"We do not accept any sort of discrimination at any of our properties, and we
immediately take strict measures that may result in the contract with asset owners
being terminated. Any such behaviour that may be construed as discrimination would
be a grave breach of OYO's work policies "based on the assertion.

"Based on an unconfirmed message that spread across a few hotels and resulted in
the annoyance to the client, we have opened an investigation into the manager's
unilateral actions. We apologise deeply for this terrible incident, "The statement was
made by an OYO spokesman.
5. EXPLAIN ON COMPANY’S CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ITS
IMPACTS TOWARDS SOCIETY.

What does corporate social responsibility entail?

• Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a self-policing business model that aids an

organisation in upholding its social obligations to the public, its stakeholders, and
itself. Companies can be aware of their impact on the economic, social, and
environmental aspects of society by engaging in corporate social responsibility, often
known as corporate citizenship.

• To practise corporate social responsibility (CSR), a firm must conduct its regular
operations in a way that benefits society and the environment rather than harming
them.

OYO HOTEL's Corporate Social Responsibility

As a component of a larger organisation, OYO Hotel and its business partner work to
ensure that all guests have a comfortable stay and that the services OYO has
committed to provide are acceptable. OYO has the authority to order hotel owners to
offer OYO's clients room stay services. Oyo is a global platform that provides full
stack technology that boosts earnings and streamlines operations for entrepreneurs
and small businesses with hotels and houses. The Oyo Hotel offers guests
trustworthy lodging they may reserve right away.

i. Oyo Hotel Impact Towards Society

Positive impact towards society

The manner the hospitality chain attends to their needs is preferred by many clients.
So, from the comfort of your home, you can reserve a room or apartment anytime
you need one. The following characteristics are some of OYO Rooms' key benefits
and help explain why this hotel company is frequently recommended by visitors.

1. Guests think OYO Rooms is a practical choice.

If you're travelling on a tight budget to another nation without making any

arrangements in advance, OYO Rooms might help you avoid problems. Even before
you arrive, you can easily find an OYO Room close your location and 1 Room for up
to 3 guests. Additionally, you have a choice of over 200 locations and over 8,000
hotels in India alone.

2. Affordable pricing is one of many advantages of OYO Rooms

The cost of OYO rooms is a favourite among guests. The average cost for a hotel
with basic facilities in India is 399 INR. The best aspect is that the business allows
you to choose to pay at an hourly rate. So, rather than wasting time in the waiting
area if you arrive early to catch a flight from Delhi to New York at 4:00 pm, you might
seek for an OYO Rooms homestay.
3. Ease of Access

The booking process is quite simple because you can select your lodging in
practically every city. There is certainly an OYO Rooms chain all over the Northeast
if you're in a haste to go to Rishikesh, the world's yoga capital. On the plus side, you
may use the OYO Rooms service and reserve a stay while on the road by
downloading the company's official app.

4. Impeccable Hospitality

The fact that OYO Rooms does not own any hotels or vacation homes is one of its
major advantages. Being the greatest substitute for Airbnb, it simply forms
partnerships with hotels to guarantee that visitors have first-rate amenities, just as
they would have with straightforward reservations. Additionally, OYO Rooms has
made sure that the middle and upper classes can choose the best services while
staying within their means.

5. Employment Options

Young professionals can find many job opportunities at OYO Rooms in a variety of
fields. You can search for employment at OYO in addition to applying for internships,
contract work, and permanent positions. The OYO Careers staff can be reached
through the careers.apply page at oyorooms.com.

Currently, the corporation employs a sizable staff of around 17000 people. Expect
additional employment chances in the future as the company looks to expand its
presence in the UK, UAE, and US.

Negative impact towards society

In addition to offering a variety of services to clients, the business recently made the
news. However, the majority of the time, OYO Rooms' drawbacks are dealt with by
the hosts.

1. Failure to pay hotels

OYO collaborates with hotels to offer customers the best services at competitive
costs. As a result, since the hotel must adhere to the pricing guidelines established
by OYO rooms, the actual cost of services or rentals is decreased.

Many times, hoteliers have complained that OYO has overcharged them or even
refused to pay them their entire dues. OYO Rooms has even been the target of
criminal complaints from some hotel owners who claim the company practises
predatory pricing.

2. Noisy Locations

One of the main drawbacks of OYO Rooms is how difficult it is to locate a

quiet place to rest for a few hours. The majority of OYO accommodations are either
close to train and airport stations or in crowded locations. Make sure you find a
suitable and quiet location to leave your horses, or prepare for any issues.

3. Hidden Cams

A hotel owner in Bhubaneswar was accused of putting a spycam in the

guestroom and extorting a couple, which shocked the public. Although the
neighbourhood police afterwards actively handled the matter, it still seems
troublesome that there is a doubt regarding the customer's right to privacy.

4. Data Privacy is one of the concerning disadvantages of OYO Rooms

OYO rooms expected to continue using a digital register system in 2019 to

keep track of all the information about their clients. The corporation will be able to
exchange real-time client data with governmental organisations thanks to this
mechanism. Many users think their privacy would be in danger since the government
may alter this data.

5. Lack of Visibility

Some OYO Rooms locations are hidden since travellers might find it
challenging to find lodging right away after arriving in a new location. Hotels and
vacation rentals might be situated, for instance, in confined spaces or places where
an OYO Rooms advertisement is scarcely perceptible.

Final Thoughts on OYO Rooms' Pros and Cons

Users from all over the world who enjoy travelling for business or pleasure have
shown a lot of interest in the organisation. For people on the move, OYO Rooms is
the ideal option because it offers nearly same amenities at reasonable rates.
However, before finalising your reservation, be sure to take a few drawbacks of OYO
Rooms into account. You can evaluate whether Oyo Rooms is worthwhile by
considering its advantages and disadvantages.
6. CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, OYO Hotels & Homes is a good hotel company in providing
the best services for their customers. It has successfully become a strong brand
equity and standardization model as a high-quality budget hotel network.
OYO has their own loyal customers and a great demand in the world as it
managed to be the top 3 largest hotel chain with over 40 000 hotels that listed
globally. This is mainly because of the efforts and the actions that the company took
based on the business model of OYO Rooms to create commercial value of itself.
This consists of five values preposition which is simplicity, convenience, speed,
design and reliability besides the low prices. All of this set up a high standard for the
company to give good hospitality services doesn’t matter how cheap and high cost it
is because customer is always right and that’s what and how makes it standing
where OYO is right now in the world’s eyes. It won’t happen without the skilled OYO
employees, a powerful mobile application and large database of users and clients.
However, every business whether it is a small or big companies, happened to
face some challenges for a short and long-terms depending on how big the problems
are and how they handle them. At the end of 2019, the world including OYO has
been affected a lot by the global pandemic disease, Covid-19 and because of that,
the hotel revenues has dropped more than 50%. So, OYO has reduced the
employees’ salary and minimized the human workers in order to reduce the costs.
Asides from that, noisy locations, lack of visibility and privacy has also impacted the
customers demand of OYO. It is clearly shown that OYO has both advantages and
disadvantages besides being one of the most popular booking hotel platforms for
users across the world who love and enjoy to travel.
