Identify at least five kinds of alternative energy resources in the Philippines. Describe
each of the alternative energy sources and cite their locations/address in the
Philippines with accompanying pictures.

• Geothermal power
Tiwi, Albay

The geothermal field of Tiwi is located at Mt. Malinao in the Province of Albay in the
Philippines, ca 350 km southeast of Manila.

The Tiwi Geothermal Complex, operated by the Philippine Geothermal Production

Company, Inc. (PGPC), comprises several geothermal power plants. These plants tap into
the geothermal reservoirs beneath the surface, utilizing steam to drive turbines and
produce electricity. Tiwi's geothermal facilities contribute substantially to the Philippines'
renewable energy capacity, providing a reliable and sustainable source of electricity to the
Luzon grid.

• Hydroelectric plants
Angat Dam
Hydroelectric power uses the energy of flowing or falling water to generate electricity. The
Angat Dam, located near Norzagaray, Bulacan, is a key hydropower infrastructure in the
Philippines. The dam is located along the Angat River and has power generation
components that use the river's flow to generate electricity. The Angat Hydroelectric Power
Plant contributes to the energy demands of Luzon, primarily Metro Manila and the
surrounding provinces. Furthermore, the dam acts as a multipurpose reservoir, supplying
water for irrigation and domestic use in the area.

• Solar power
Tanauan, Batangas

Solar power transforms sunlight into electricity via photovoltaic cells or solar thermal
systems. Tanauan, located in the province of Batangas, is home to several solar power
installations in the Philippines. These include utility-scale solar farms as well as home solar
panels. Tanauan has ample sunlight throughout the year, making it a suitable location for
solar energy projects. Tanauan's solar power plants contribute to Batangas' renewable
energy capacity and the region's move to cleaner and more sustainable electricity
generation.

• Wind Power
Ilocos Norte (Bangui Wind Farm)
Wind power uses the kinetic energy of the wind to generate electricity using wind turbines.
Ilocos Norte, particularly the municipality of Bangui, is well-known for the Bangui Wind
Farm, a major wind generating plant in the Philippines. The Bangui Wind Farm, located
along the shoreline facing the South China Sea, contains rows of wind turbines that collect
the region's strong and constant winds. This wind farm significantly adds to the
Philippines' renewable energy portfolio, giving clean electricity to the Luzon grid while
lowering reliance on fossil fuels.

• Biomass power
Bulacan Biomass Power Plant

San Carlos Biomass Power Plant is a 19.99-megawatt biopower plant. It is situated in

Negros Oriental, Philippines. According to Global Data, which analyzes and profiles over
170,000 power plants globally, the project is now underway. It was developed in a single
phase. San Carlos Biopower built the project, and Thomas Lloyd Group now owns 100% of
it. The project creates 141GWh of electricity and provides enough clean energy to power
212,000 households, offsetting 16,480t of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) annually.
