MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 8

Illustrating and Graphing Linear Inequalities in Two Variables

Directions: Match the mathematical sentences in Column A to the
mathematical inequalities in Column B.

Notice that in Figures I and 2 the line is a dashed or broken line. This means that
the points on this line are not included in the solution. Figures 3 and 4 used solid
line. This means that the points on the line are included in the solution. The shaded
region in Figure 1 and 3 are in the same location, the same with Figure 2 and 4.
To graph linear inequality in two variables the following steps are helpful.
Step 1: Transform the inequality into the slope-intercept form.
Step 2: Get the slope and y-intercept
Step 3: Locate the y – intercept in the coordinate plane. From it, plot the other
points (at least two points) using the slope.
Step 4: Connect at least two points to draw a line.

Note: (a) use dashed or broken line when the inequality uses the symbols < and
>. This means that the points on this line are not included in the solution set. (b)
use solid line when the inequality uses the symbols ≥ and ≤. This means that the
points on this line are part of the solution set.
Step 5: Notice that the line divided the plane into two half planes. To determine
which half-plane will be shaded, take any point (a test point) from the two half
planes. If the point (ordered pair) satisfies the given inequality, shade the half plane
where the point is located.
Step 6: Show the graph of the inequality.

Activity 1

Directions: Determine the boundary and the shaded region of each linear inequality in
two variables by putting a check mark (✓) on a proper column that corresponds to your
answer.

Activity 2

Directions: Consider the following ordered pairs, which of them satisfy linear inequalities
in two variables? Test all the points in the given linear inequalities.

1. 𝑥 + 3𝑦 > 3 ( −3, 4 ) ( 5, 5 ) ( −5, 8 ) ( 3, −5 )

2. 𝑥 > −3𝑦 + 4 ( 6, −1 ) ( 1, 5 ) ( 0, 5 ) ( 2, 3 )

3. 2𝑥 – 3𝑦 ≤ 1 ( 4, 1 ) ( 1, 1 ) ( 0, 0 ) ( 5, −3 )

4. 10 < − 5𝑥 + 2𝑦 ( − 3, 1 ) ( −5, 4 ) ( − 2, − 2) ( 4, 4 )

5. 4𝑥 + 3𝑦 ≥ 12 ( −4, − 3) ( 5, 4 ) ( 5, −1 ) ( 1, −6 )

Activity 3

Directions: Graph the following linear inequalities. Write your answer in a graphing
paper. Use any coloring materials to shade the infinite solutions of the inequalities.

1. 𝑦 > 𝑥 − 3

2. 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 < 12

3. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 ≤ 4

Illustrating and Verifying a Relation and a Function

What is a relation?

A relation between two sets is any ordered pairs containing one object from each set.
The elements in the first set where the arrows come from are called domain. While the
elements of the second set where the arrows end is called range. The reason or rule
that you follow to make this mapping is the relation of the two sets.

A relation may be classified as one-to-one, many-to-one, or one-to-many. It is one-to-

one relation if every element in the domain is mapped to a unique element in the range,
many-to-one if two or more elements in the domain are mapped to only one element in
the range, one-to-many if each element in the domain is mapped to any two or more
elements in the range. A combination of a many-to-one relation and a one-to-many
relation is called a many-to-many relation.

Activity 1

Directions: Use the given set of ordered pairs to complete the table of values, draw its
graph, illustrate the mapping, and generate its rule. The first two values are done for
you.

Set of ordered pairs: {(-3, -2), (-2,0), (-1,2), (0,4), (1,6), (2,8)}

Determining the Dependent and Independent Variables and Finding the

Domain and Range of a Function
Independent variable is a variable that will change by taking on different values. It
changes independently. In a relation, independent variable controls the dependent
variable. It is generally represented by the 𝑥 −variable or what is referred to as the 𝑥
−value.

Dependent variable is a variable that is affected by the independent variable, and it

changes in response to the independent variable. In a relation, dependent variable
depends on the independent variable. It is generally represented by the 𝑦 −variable or
what is referred to as the 𝑦 −value.

The domain of a function is the set of all acceptable inputs. Generally, domain is the
set of 𝑥 −values or the abscissa of the ordered pairs of a function. The range of a
function is the set of resulting outputs. Generally, range is the set of 𝑦 −values or the
ordinate of the ordered pairs of a function.

Activity 1

Directions: Given each situation below, determine each variable (in italicized form)
whether independent or dependent, and determine if the said variable controls or
depends on the other. Item number 1 was done as an example.

1. Doris was looking for a job. She noticed that the higher paying job requires higher
education. Higher education is the ________________ variable because it
________________ the variable “higher paying job”.

2. Roberto buys 2 kilos of dressed chicken at the market. How much will he pay if the
chicken costs Php155 per kilo? The cost of the chicken is the ____________________
variable because it ________________ the number of kilograms of chicken.

3. Paul planned to tile his floor. He measures the length and the width of his floor to
calculate the area. The area of the floor is the ________________ variable because it
________________ the length and the width of the floor.

4. Jana auditioned in the “Pinoy Got Talent” competition. Her performances got a vote
of 4 “Yeses” from the judges. Jana’s performances are the ________________ variable
because it ________________ the judges’ vote.

5. Erick’s math grade in the first quarter was 98%. He had completed all 10
requirements. The number of requirements completed is the ________________
variable because it ________________ the math grade.
