Polite, casual and humble speech
In both Japanese and English, we choose polite or casual speech depending on the situation
and to whom we are talking. For example, if we were speaking politely to a teacher, we might
say, ‘May I borrow your pen please?’ How would you ask a close friend the same question?
In Japanese, we can also use humble speech. What is the difference? おかあさん!

Earthquakes are one of the most feared natural
disasters in Japan. Japan is situated on the

Earthquake (1995) and the Tohoku Earthquake
(2011). The Tohoku Earthquake was the most

gift is given from July to August and is called お中元. The winter gift is given

around December and is called お歳暮. These gifts are usually just given between
family members and business colleagues.
Gift giving in Japan is not only for special occasions. It is expected in daily
life as well. When you visit someone’s house, it is very common to take て み やげ,
a thank-you gift for the care given by the host. おみやげ are ‘souvenirs’ brought
back from a holiday, or even a day outing. While bringing home souvenirs is
not unusual in other cultures, Japanese people give おみやげ to colleagues
and acquaintances, as well as to very close friends and family members.
Giving money on most special occasions is normal in Japanese culture: wedding
gifts are usually money, as are New Year and condolence gifts. There are special
money envelopes for each occasion, with different colours and designs.
When you give gifts to someone, you might receive something of a similar value
in return. This is called お か えし, meaning ‘a gift given in return’.

ふぐ is the Japanese name for the puffer fish. When it meets a predator,
the puffer fish blows itself up into a ball, making itself three times bigger!
What makes the puffer fish fearsome is that it contains tetrodotoxin, a deadly
substance. It is said that one puffer fish has enough of the toxin to kill 30 adult
humans, and currently there is no known antidote.
ふぐ is an expensive fish used for さしみ,か らあげ and hot pot dishes. It is
consideredadelicacyandhasbeeneateninJapansinceancienttimes.While
local Japanese authorities originally banned the consumption of ふぐ, many chefs
and ふぐ enthusiasts have studied the fish to find ways to make it safe to eat. The
ban has since been lifted, but only an authorised chef can prepare ふぐ for human
consumption.Thechefmustcarefullyremovethetoxicorgansand,todoso,they

日本人のおもてなしと きくばり
Hospitality the Japanese way
You’ve learnt a lot about Japan by now, including topics such as anime, seasons,
school life and cuisine, to name a few. Let's develop a deeper understanding about
Japanese culture by exploring how Japanese people think and what they value.
When you have a guest staying at your home, what might you do to make your
guest comfortable? When you go to a restaurant or a hotel, what do you consider
to be good service?
In Japanese, the words おもてなし and きくばり mean to be attentive to
someone sincerely and wholeheartedly. To be attentive in this context means to
read the atmosphere and sense the mood of an occasion. It is not only to entertain
the guest to achieve some kind of self-satisfaction, but to be quick in perceiving
the guest’s needs and desires, and the overall mood, in order to entertain the guest
accordingly. This is to be done inconspicuously; otherwise, the other party feels a
sense of obligation. Here are some examples.

な adjectives The ~な ending is only used when the な adjective comes straight before a noun.
です means ‘to be’ and is translated in many ways depending on the context and tense – it is/we are/they are/

it follows its own rules.
