What Is It

What is an opinion?
An opinion refers to a personal belief. It relates to how someone feels about
something. Others may agree or disagree with an opinion, but they cannot prove or
disprove it.
What is evidence?

3
Evidence is anything that you see, experience, read, or is told that causes you to
believe that something is true or has really happened. Evidence is information that comes
closest to the facts of a matter.

Why should opinions be supported with evidence?

Strong opinions may offend the reader, who may feel differently about the issue or have
a personal connection to the opposing views. Opinions without supporting evidence can
compromise the strength and perceived validity of the paper's argument because such
opinions may overshadow other trustworthy evidences.
Directions: In the selection below, analyze which is an opinion and cite the evidence to
this opinion. Answer the given questions that follow.

Maricel’s dad got a new job. They moved to a new house in a new town.
Maricel likes the new house. She thinks it is nice. Her room has a window that
looks out on the backyard. The bed and dresser from the old house are in her
new room. All her toys are in her new room too. She likes her new room. She
hopes she will like her new school too.

Questions:
1. Why did Maricel and her family move to a new town?
2. Why do you think Maricel likes her new room?
3. Underline the opinion and box the evidences from the selection.

What’s More

Activity A
Directions: Read the selection then answer the questions below.

THE BOY WHO COULDN’T SING

“You cannot sing,” Mario declared. “You can do nothing but cut pieces of wood with a knife.
Of what good is that to you? It won’t keep you from starving.”
“My brother is right. I can do nothing but cut bits of wood with a knife,” thirteen-year-old
Armando thought sadly. His brother’s words were ringing in his ears. His brothers, Mario
and Alejandro, could make music but he couldn’t. They earned good money with their
music, too. As they walked along, Mario and Alejandro chatted happily. Their dreams of
fame and fortune from their music filled their hearts with joyful expectations. But Armando
said little. Mario’s remarks that he could do nothing but whittle made his heart heavy. He
loved music, yet he could not share in making it. He could not even strum a guitar. He
couldn’t sing either. He was a monotone. When he tried to sing, he sounded funny. It made
the boys laugh. They made fun of his voice and his singing. It was hard to be just a

4
whittler when his brothers and friends could play the guitar and sing well, too. What was his
future as a whittler? This thought troubled him. That night he did not sleep. His mind was
busy with an idea that had just come. He could not sing. He was only good at whittling.
Couldn’t he use it to achieve something? Here in his own native Maragondon, Lapulapu
City was a man who makes fine guitars with knife and wood.
Before the sun was up the next day, Armando got up with a happy heart. After helping
himself to what was left over from last night’s supper, he crept out of the house while his
parents and brothers were still asleep. He took with him some articles he had made with
his knife.
He walked to Fernando’s Guitar Shop and presented himself to Tiyo Fernando. “I have
brought these things for you to see,” he said. “I cut them out with my knife; will you help me
learn to make fine guitars?”
Tiyo Fernando smiled. “Why do you want to make fine guitars?” he asked
Armando’s face lit up and he spoke, “Because I love music. Both my brothers can sing.
They can play the guitar, too. I love music as much as they, but I’m a monotone. I can do
nothing but whittle. By making guitars I believe I can contribute my share to making music.”
Tiyo Fernando laid his hand on Armando’s shoulder. “Come into the shop. Your interest
deserves attention,” he declared.
Armando went with him into the shop. “The important thing is the desire to learn and make
good,” Tiyo Fernando told Armando.
So, Armando, the boy who could not sing, became an apprentice in Fernando’s Guitar
Shop. Day after day, he worked seriously and whittled patiently. At last he finished a guitar.
It was a fine guitar. Tiyo Fernando was much pleased with it. There was no doubt Armando
would make an excellent guitar maker.
Tiyo Fernando taught him the secrets of the craft. He showed Armando that each little thing
well done each day would lead to a great achievement.

Questions:
1. Who do you think Mario is talking to?
2. What can be Mario’s relationship to this person?
3. What did Armando do to continue contributing to the music of others?
4. Are you a type of person who easily gives up when someone lets you down?
5. What lesson did you learn from the selection?

Activity B
Directions: Read the selection below then write at least one (1) opinion and one
(1) evidence to support it.

Jose works with animals; in fact, he spends every spare moment in a

neighborhood pet store. After school, he helps feed the animals and clean their
cages. He spends a lot of time training the animals, so they get along with
people.
Jose believes that being a veterinarian and working with animals would
be a wonderful thing for him to do when he grows up. He thinks that he will
become an excellent veterinary doctor in the future.

12
What Is It

By reading the following informed opinion do you think TV commercials are useful in
our everyday living?
Surely, you are aware that there are a lot of useful advertisements we see while
watching television and even surfing internet, right? This is very common to us Filipinos to
have a lot of opinions and disagreements about things. Opinions have been a part of our lives
from media, peer groups, internet, and everywhere.
Same goes also in choosing a product.
How do you choose a product and its service? How do you assess your idea to
patronize it? We usually choose products with good quality, affordable, accessible, and
nutritious. Taking a stand of the products is the right thing to do.
Now, were your choices and opinions affected by advertisements in print, radio,
television, or internet? Certainly, people make a stand of their choices based on the credibility
of the products and thus, promote good values to the people.

How do you define “opinion”?

An opinion is a judgment, viewpoint, or statement that is not conclusive, rather

than facts which are true statements.

What about “informed opinion”?

An informed opinion is a belief, judgment or way of thinking about something based on

information.

Making a stand on the informed opinion that you’ve seen and heard is very important.
You should always believe and stick to your opinion and never be afraid to voice it. Everyone
could disagree or everyone could agree but neither determines its validity.

Here are the three main factors that highlight and help you how to make a stand in an
informed opinion:

1. Be Aware of your own thoughts

Your thoughts need an outlet. Your ideas and understanding, about anything are one
part of the story, one angle of perception. And this can happen when you let others understand
what is in your mind and initiate a conversation, discussion, or debate.
2. Bring out your inner confidence
Your thoughts and opinions need a voice, today or tomorrow. And it is a slow process
of building self-confidence. Talk about your thoughts. Don’t fear being judged and ridiculed,
you have the right to have an opinion, to reach a conclusion about any and every trivial issue.
You also get to learn, a wide range of things about which you certainly did not have an idea
till you open and bring out your confidence.
3) Open your way to new experiences
Be open-minded. Try and explore new information, ideas, knowledge, and discover
an untraveled path of experiences.
