Showing Contrast

showing contrast or contract conjunction is vocabulary that functions to connect words with
words, or between sentences that are contra or opposite or different. This means that the
relationship between the first sentence and the next sentence is different.

types of showing contrast

The conjunctions used are contrasting one idea with another. The conjunctions that you often
encounter with this trait are:

though
although
even though
yet
but
however
despite
in spite of
even so
on the contrary
anyway
nevertheless
in contrast.

##Though
The word though is a conjunction that is often used in informal conversation. Though can be
interpreted though or even though.

Though + Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)

Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + though + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)

Example:

#Even though she is allowed to stay up late on the weekend, she decides to go to bed early.
#She decided to go to bed early, though she is allowed to stay up late on the weekend.

##Although / Even though


Although and even though have the same meaning as though, namely even though or although.

Both are more formal in nature than though.

Although / Even though + Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)

Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + although / even though + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)

Although / Even though + Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)


Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + although / even though + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)

Example:

Even though we don't have much, we still want to donate something.


We still want to donate something, even though we don't have much.

##Yet / But
The words yet and but are used in everyday conversation. The meaning is but.

Clause 1 (Subject + Verb) + yet / but + Clause 2 (Subject + Verb)

Example:

This selling strategy is not very promising, but they still want to try it.

##Despite / In spite of
Despite and in spite of, they are quite formal, so they are often used in formal writing or speech.

Both have the meaning despite, although, or despite. But their use is different.

Clause (Subject + Verb) + despite + Noun / Noun Phrase

Despite + Noun / Noun Phrase + Clause (Subject + Verb)

Clause (Subject + Verb) + in spite of + Noun / Noun Phrase

In spite of + Noun / Noun Phrase + Clause (Subject + Verb)

Example:

Siska was barely appreciated by her parents, despite her achievements at school.
Despite his achievements at school, siska was barely appreciated by his parents.

##Nevertheless
Nevertheless has the meaning even so or however. This word is used to connect two different
sentences.

Sentence 1 (Subject + Verb). Nevertheless + Sentence 2 (Subject + Verb).

Example:

The Government has established a policy related to public health insurance since 2022.
Nevertheless, the rate of people who have not applied to public health insurance is still
concerning.

##However
However it has the same function as but. But this word is only used at the beginning of a
sentence.

Sentence 1 (Subject + Verb). However + Sentence 2 (Subject + Verb).

Example:

This evidence points clearly to an increase in the rate of domestic violence during the pandemic.
However, the health emergency protocols limited the movement of the authorities.
