Quantitative Analysis

Assignment #2
CSEC Chemistry Paper 2 Jan 2001 Question 1
1. (a)
(i) – Use small funnel to fill burette.
- Ensure no air bubbles in burette.
- Ensure burette clamped vertically in retort stand.
- Take readings at eye level.
(ii) - Pipette 25 cm3 of Solution T into a conical flask.
- Add 3 drops of indicator solution to conical flask (Methyl Orange or Phenolphthalein)

Final Burette Reading (cm ) 20.60 40.10 30.10 40.10
Initial Burette Reading (cm3) 0.00 20.00 10.10 20.00
Volume Solution S Used (cm3) 20.60 20.10 20.00 20.10

(iv) Average volume of S = (20.1 + 20 + 20.1) ÷ 3 = 20.07 cm3

Do not include the 20.6 in your average calculations because this value is greater than 0.1
difference from the other values.
(v) Mass of 1 mol of HNO3 = 1 + 14 + (3 x 16) = 63 g
Concentration of HNO3 = 7.875 g dm-3 ÷ 63g = 0.125 mol dm-3
(vi) 1000 cm3 HNO3 contain 0.125 mol
⸫ 20.07 cm3 will contain (0.125 ÷ 1000) x 20.07 = 2.508 x 10-3 mol
(vii) From the equation: 1 mol of HNO3 reacted with 1 mol of NaOH
⸫ 2.508 x 10-3 mol of HNO3 will react with 2.508 x 10-3 mol NaOH
(viii) 25 cm3 of NaOH contain 2.508 x 10-3 mol
⸫ 1000 cm3 of NaOH will contain (2.508 x 10-3 ÷ 25) x 1000 = 0.1003 mol dm-3
(ix) Mass of 1 mol NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40g
Concentration of NaOH in g dm-3 = 0.1003 mol dm-3 x 40 = 4.011 g dm-3
% purity of NaOH = (4.011 ÷ 5.0) x 100 = 80.22%
