What’s New

What is the width of a rectangular classroom if it has an area of x 2 + 3x – 18 sqm.

and its length is x-3 m?

What operation will help us answer the problem?

What is It

The area of a rectangle is obtained by multiplying its length and width, A = (L)(W).
Therefore, to find its width we need to divide its area by its length. In the given problem, the
data are:
Area = x2 + 3x – 18 sqm → dividend (polynomial of 3 terms → trinomial)
Length = x-3 m → divisor (polynomial of 2 terms → binomial)
Width =?

Solution:
To divide a polynomial a polynomial by another polynomial, we can use long division
with the same procedure as dividing integers.

x+6 ← quotient

divisor → X – 3) x2 + 3x – 18 ← dividend

X2 - 3x ← subtraction process
0 6x - 18

6x - 18 ← subtraction process

0 ← remainder
Check:
(Quotient) (Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
(x + 6) (x – 3) = x2 + 3x – 18
X - 3x + 6x – 18 = x2 + 3x – 18
2

X2 + 3x - 18 = x2 + 3x – 18

The quotient when x2 + 3x – 18 is divided by x – 3 is x+ 6.

Therefore, the width of the rectangle is x + 6 meters.

Grade 10 Mathematics 5
Module 8: Dividing Polynomials by Long Division and Synthetic Division

To summarize the process:

Steps in Dividing Polynomials Using Long Division

1. Arrange the divisor and the dividend in descending powers or in standard form.
2. Divide the first terms of the dividend by the first term of the divisor to obtain the first term
of the quotient.
3. Multiply the first term of the quotient by the whole divisor.
4. Do the subtraction process. Then bring down the remaining terms in the dividend.
5. Repeat the process in step 2 to obtain the second term of the quotient.
6. Repeat the process in step 2 until you reach the point that you can no longer divide
because the degree of the divisor is already less than the remaining dividend.

There is a shorter procedure when a polynomial is divided by a binomial of the form

(x - c). This method is called synthetic division. In this procedure, we only consider the
coefficients in the process. The divisor must be a 1st degree binomial and must have 1 as its
leading coefficient (1x – c).

Let use the same problem:

Area of the rectangle = x2 + 3x – 18 sq m → dividend
Length = x-3 m → divisor of the form (x – c)
Width =?

To divide P(x) = (x2 + 3x – 18) by (x-3) using synthetic division let us follow the steps
outlined below: The procedure involves writing numbers in three rows.

Steps in Dividing the Polynomial P(x) = x2 + 3x – 18 by (x-3)

using Synthetic Division

Step 1.
Arrange the coefficients of the
dividend P(x) = x2 + 3x – 18 in descending 1 + 3 - 18
powers, replacing 0 for any missing term.
In this example, there is no missing term.

Step 2.
The divisor is x – 3. Therefore, its root 3 1 + 3 - 18
is 3 or x = 3. Place the root of the divisor at
the upper left corner.

Solution in finding the root:

Equate the divisor to zero: x – 3 = 0
Solve for x: X= 3

Grade 10 Mathematics 6
Module 8: Dividing Polynomials by Long Division and Synthetic Division

Step 3.
Bring down the leading coefficient of 3 1 + 3 - 18
P(x) = x2 + 3x – 18, which is 1 in this example 3
and multiply this by 3 (the root of the divisor).
1 6
Write the product under 3, the second term
coefficient and add. The sum is 6.
Step 4.
Multiply the resulting sum 6 by 3 (the
root of the divisor) and place the product 18 3 1 + 3 - 18
under -18, the coefficient of the third term, 3 18
then add.
1 6 0
The last sum is the remainder. Therefore,
the remainder is zero or there is no
remainder. R(x) = 0
Step 5.
The numbers in the third row, 1 , 6 3 1 + 3 - 18
except the last digit 0 represents the 3 18
coefficients of the quotient Q(x), which must
be one degree less than P(X).
The degree of P(x) = x2 + 3x – 18 is 2,
1 6 0 ← 3rd Row
X + 6
therefore the degree of Q(x) is 2-1 = 1.
Quotient : Q(x) = x + 6
Remainder: R(x) = 0
Therefore:
P(x) = x2 + 3x – 18 x – 3 ÷ (x – 3)
Quotient: P(x) = x + 6
Remainder: R(x) = 0
The width of the rectangle is (x + 6) m

Let us have more examples:

Example 1.
Use synthetic division to find the quotient and remainder of 4x2 + 3x3 + 8 is divided by x+ 5 ?

Rewrite first P(x) in standard form or in descending powers.

P(x) = 3x3 + 4x2 + 8 (The 1st degree term is missing)

P(x) = 3x3 + 4x2 + 0x +8 ; Divisor: x + 5 = 0

Grade 10 Mathematics 7
Module 8: Dividing Polynomials by Long Division and Synthetic Division

Check:
(Quotient) (Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend
(3x2 - 11x + 55) (x + 5) + 267 = 3x3 + 4x2 + 8
3x3 – 11x2 + 55x + 15x2 – 55x + 275) + (-267) = 3x3 + 4x2 + 8
3x3 – 11x2 + 15 x2 + 55x – 55x + 275 – 267 = 3x3 + 4x2 + 8
3x3 + 4x2 + 8 = 3x3 + 4x2 + 8

267
Q(x) = 3x2 - 11x + 55 -
𝑥 +5
Or
Q(x) = 3x2 - 11x + 55
R(x) = 267

Example 2
What is the quotient and remainder if P(x) = 6x3 + 17x – 16x2 – 5 is divided by 3x – 2?
Solve by long division and synthetic division.

A. By Long Division
* Rewrite first P(x) in standard form or in descending powers.
P(X) = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5 ÷ (3x -2)

2x2 - 4x + 3
3x – 2) 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
6x3 - 4x2 2

0 - 12x2 + 17x
- 12x2 + 8x 2

0 9x – 5
9x - 6
1

Check: (Quotient) (Divisor) + Remainder = Dividend

(2x2 - 4x + 3) (3x – 2) + 1 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
(6x3 – 4x2 – 12x2 + 8x + 9x – 6) + 1 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 6 + 1 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5

1
Therefore the quotient is 2x2 - 4x + 3 +
3𝑥−2
Or
Q(x) = 2x2 - 4x + 3
R(x) = 1

Grade 10 Mathematics 8
Module 8: Dividing Polynomials by Long Division and Synthetic Division

B.By Synthetic Division

Rewrite first P(x) in standard form or in descending powers.
P(X) = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5 ÷ (3x -2)

Divisor: 3x – 2.
Observe that the divisor is not of the form (1x-c) or (x – c), but by factoring we can
2
have: 3x – 2 = 3(x – ). Therefore, the problem can be restated as:
3
2
P(X) = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5 ÷ 3 ( x – )
3
2
Thus we first use synthetic division to divide 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5 by ( x – ), and then
3
divide the result by 3 to get the final answer.

(6x3 – 4x2 – 12x2 + 8x + 9x – 6) + 1 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 6 + 1 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5 = 6x3 – 16x2 + 17x – 5
