Theme: What Impresses God

Intro: Maayong aga sa tanan. May ara isa ka dautan nga tao, isa ka

membership, naghatag siya sang iya testimony sa atubangan, hambal niya,
“Ako maayo kong tao, nagdako gid ko sa simbahan”, tungod sin inga
testimony ginbatun dayon siya as new member of the Church. Pag-uli niya
iyang ginsugid sa iyang asawa ang iyang gihimo. hambal sa iyang asawa,
“nganung ginhimo man to nimo? Amo ni ang imong himuon, “balik ka sa
simbahan next week tapos ihambal ang tinuod”. And so the next Sunday
he went back to the church, nagkadto dayon sya sa atubangan, hambal
niya, “Pasaylua ko ninyo kay nagtinikal ko sa inyo, sa tuod lang isa ko ka
dautan nga tao, palahubog ko, babaedor, kag sugarol kag sa tuod sukad-
sukad subong pa lang ko nakasulod ug simbahan, I’m sorry”. Immediately
gitanggal ang iyang membership sa simbahan. Naguha siya nga nagsige’g
panglingo sa iyang ulo, hambal niya, “kining simbahana ni talagsaun kayo
ni ba, kay sa dira nga nag tinikal ko, ila kong gibaton, subong nga
naghambal ko sang tinuod ila man noon ko gipahalin”

Anu nga lesson ang atun makuha sa sini nga story?

Sometimes mga utod ang aton tan-aw sa aton kaugalingon taas kaysa sa
iban, kis-a ang atong tan-aw sa aton kaugalingon mas maayo kaysa sa
iban. May ara ta pagtan-aw sa atong kaugalingon nga murag bag di na ta
makasala, tapos ang iban tan-aw naton makasasala na kaayo nga hindi
dapat palapitan. Tama?
I want you to open your Bible in Luke 18:9-14. And let’s see what Jesus is
telling us about this parable. This morning let me bring you the theme,
“WHAT IMPRESSES GOD?” Sa tagalong ni kay, “ano ba yong
nagpapahanga sa Dios?” You know what, one time or another we are
guilty of trying to impress God. Kana bang ginahimo naton ang tanan para
mubilieve ang Ginoo sa atun. Because we have that mentality nga the
more nga ma impress ang Ginoo sa atua the more nya kita panalinginan,
Kana bang makahambal siya nga, “biliba gyud nako sa nimo noy uy, hanga
kaayo ko sa imoha.” We are trying to impress God, but the worst part of it
is when we look at ourselves as righteous, maayo, and then we started to
look down people around us. Tapos ato dayon icompare, “ako taas sila
ubos, ako maayo sila dautan o malain.”

This morning we will find out What Impresses God?

First, WHAT IMPRESSES GOD IS WHEN WE DON’T TRY TO IMPRESS
GOD. In our text in Luke 18:9-14, may ara duha ka tao nga nagsulod sa
templo para mangamuyo. Ang isa kay Phariseo (belongs to a religious
group), ang isa ka tao kay tax collector (considered sinner at that time).
Nagtindog dayon ang Phariseo kag nag-ampo, atun pamatian ang iya
pangamuyo, hambal niya, “Ginoo salamat kay hindi ko parehas sang
iban nga mga tao, salamat kay hindi ko kawatan, hindi ko tikalon and I
haven’t
committed adultery. Salamat kay hindi ko parehas sining tax
collector. Hambal niya, nagafasting ko twice a week, nagahatag ko sa
akong tithes sa bilog nakon nga income.” amo na ang pag-ampo sa
Phariseo, kuyaw no? And according to bible scholars, ining Phariseo
didto gid daw ni siya nagtindug sa tunga sang templo, he was
standing at the heart of the temple. Ang rason nganong didto gid sya
nag tindog sa tunga, kay para mabatian sang mga tao nga siya
mainampuon, para makita sa mga tao nga siya relihiyoso. He let people
know how wonderful he was, gusto gid niya nga makita sa mga tao nga
maayo siyang tao. Nabatian man naton ang iya pangamuyo, kapila daw
siya magfasting? Ka duha sa isa ka semana(twice a week). Now sa old
testament ang mga Hudyo they are only required to fast once a year (that
is on the day of atonement), pero kining Phariseo base sa Jewish calendar,
he fasted 103 times a year, so sobra-sobra ni sa girequired sa ila nga
magfasting. Tapos hambal niya he gave his tithes of his entire income. And
according to some studies, ini daw nga Phariseo diri was a double tither,
doble siya maghatag sang iya tithes. Now wala may sayop o mali nga mag
fasting ta twice a week, wala may mal inga maghatag sing sobra sa atun
tithes. But the problem was, ining tawhana nagapati sya nga sa iyang
paghatag, sa iyang pagfasting, sa iyang pagkareligious, maimpress niya
ang Ginoo. Kabalo man ta that God looks at the heart, tama? and the heart
of this man is full of pride, this man is pretentious, kabalo mo unsay
pretentious? pakitang tao lang, this man was pretending to be good,
pretending to be spiritual, but actually he’s not. Take note of this, God is
not impress with how you behave every Sunday, but how you live
your life every day.

Second, HUMILITY IMPRESSES GOD- kung inyong naobserbahan, may

contrast nga gihimo si Jesus diri, that was between the Pharisee and the
tax collector. Kag kung atun eh try compare ning duha, langit kag duta gid
ang ila dipirensya. In Jewish society tax collectors were trash(basura),
they were considered worthless (walay pulos). They were considered
traitors to the nation of Israel. In fact they could not hold any public office.
Hindi pud sila pwede mahimong witness sa Jewish court, because their
word was considered worthless. Pero bisan amo ini ang ang kinabuhi sang
tax collector, may dako nga twist nga nahitabo diri sa parable ni J.C.. Kay
gaina ang Pharisee, he tried to impress God, pero wala gid naimpress ang
Ginoo sa iyaha mga gipanghambal. Pero ining tax collector naimpress sa
iyaha ang Ginoo without even trying to impress God. Nakita ninyo ang
contrast between them? That’s because humility impresses God. This tax
collector was as humble as the Pharisee was proud. Makita naton na sa
lugar nga ilang gitindugan, in v.13, “the tax collector was standing at a
distance.” While Pharisee stood at the center of the temple. Sa dira nga
nag-ampo na ang tax collector, hindi siya makaako nga magtangla sa
langit, but the Pharisee was proud to look up. But The tax collector was
very humble, in fact in v.13, hambal dira, “he beat his breast”,
nagahambal siya sa iyang kaugalingon nga “I am not worthy even just to
look up to heaven, kay ang akong kasing-kasing higko”. Brethren, Humility
impresses God, but there’s another thing that impresses God, that is
honesty. In v. 13, hambal sang tax collector, “Ginoo kaluy-i ako nga
makasasala”(be merciful to me, a sinner). The word merciful is Greek
word that goes back to the Hebrew word “kippur”, which literally
mean “atonement”. And the word atonement means “to cover”. Now
listen, When he said, “God be merciful to me, a sinner, what he really said
was this, “I am exposing my heart for what it is sinful, God will you
cover for me?” Amo ni ang gusto sang Ginoo nga mabatian sa tao. Admit
that you are sinner and that you need God’s power to cover for you.!”
Kung maintidihan lang naton ni sang maayo sa aton kaugalingon,
wala gid gali kita’y katungod to judge other people, wala gid gali ta
katungod to pinpoint, kung sin-o tong mga dautan, sin o tong mga
makakasala. Kay kitang tanan, nagadepende ra ta sa grasya sa Ginoo.

Conclusion:
The reason why Jesus told this story was to illustrate a principle. If
you are really a true believer, impress God by showing him how humble
you are in the sight if God, and before men. The question is, “kaya ba nato
magpaubos sa atong kaugalingon? Sa Ginoo kag sa ubang tao? Listen to
this, “What matters most is not how you see you, hindi importante kung
anu ang tan-aw nimo sa imong kaugalingon, (kristuhanon ka, maayo kang
tao) but how God sees you matters most. Kristuhanun kaha ang tan-aw sa
Ginoo nimo? Maayo kaha kang tao sa mata sa Ginoo?
Take note of this, Sa mata sa mga tao Phariseo ang gikahimut-an sang
Ginoo, but before God, the tax collector impress him so much. Because
he did not try to impress God by showing all the good things he has
done, instead he impress God by being humble, admitting he is a
sinner, he impress God by being honest, acknowledging his need, his
need for God’s working power, his need for God’s help, sa iyang
kinabuhi.

Brethren what we are right now what we are enjoying that is all by the
grace of God I hope and pray na hindi unta na ang hinungdan to look down
other people. Instead we will be chanel of blessings to other people.
I hope and pray as we enjoy our relationship with the Lord may this
humility and honesty will be in our heart always. God bless.
