QUESTION 1

According to Guthrie there are four requirements that a language should have to belong in the Bantu
language family.

1. A sign of gender , therefore prefixes assorted into classes


2. Association of these classes into singular and plural
3. Class concordance
4. No sex reference in the correlation of genders ( I.e pronouns and concords do not carry a “
male” or “ female” designation as in the case of , for example “ he” and “ she “ in English

My language belongs to the Bantu language family and it is IsiZulu. IsiZulu has a system of grammatical
genders its prefixes are assorted into classes an example is Makhumalo Ma- is a prefix that stands for
woman and – Khumalo is a clan name so what Makhumalo simply means is that a woman that belongs
to a khumalo clan so the first requirement check. Moving forward to association of these classes into
singular and plural the word choice is abantwana aba- which is plural and umntwana um- which is
singular. Third requirement is class concordance for example “ umama uya pheka “ which is subject verb
concord and lastly there is no sex reference in the correlation of genders and yes indeed the IsiZulu
language belongs to a Bantu language family.

absolute pronoun occurs after a noun, it has a function of contrasting the Noun. If the Noun is the
subject of the sentence , the absolute pronoun can act pre- nominally or post – nominally.

Ubaba ubukela izindaba ( the underlined words are in paradigmatic relation because they
substitute each other in the same context. Both sentences are in syntagmatic relation because
they have a combination of lexical units.
QUESTION 5

5.1 (i) Accent a verbal message – There was a surprise birthday for my father . The plan was to hide and
keep quite, pretend as if there is no one . We were busy preparing in the kitchen and there was a noise ,
my mom came and gave us a sign a finger on the mouth and she spread / wave her hands up and down
for us to keep quite and hide for my father while he was parking his car at the garage.

ii) Complement a verbal message- I was going to a mall with my friends while looking for a bag to match
my outfit and I was not sure which one to choose and I decided to ask mom and yes I did ,I asked “ mom
which one orange or green? “ she was busy with her phone and she pointed to the right . It was not
clear , I putted the orange one at front and hid the green one at the back , she nodded to disapproves
and put the other one and she putted a thumb up.

iii) Substitute a verbal message – my colleagues were chatting miss Myeza and Mrs Thwala . Miss
Myeza , two guys broke in to her house and they stole her accessories it was terrifying story , Mrs
Thwala had a frowning face and she shrinked and later after the story she asked “ are you okay? “

iv) Contradict a verbal message – my mom used to stock snacks for my lunchbox that will cover up the
whole month . She always count sweets , chocolate, chips and everything and that day there were five
chocolates missing, and she asked if I had extra chocolate for the past five days and I said no. My mom
was furious she thought I was lying because there was no other child in the house. I avoided her face
and started to cry because I thought she will bit me , she noticed that and she calmed her voice and
asked again the answer was still a no , she was burning with anger this time and she punished me , no
lunchbox for the whole week . Until she got a paper of chocolate in my father’s pants pocket.

5.2 maintaining personal space is important when you are with your colleagues because it has an impact
in your verbal and non- verbal communication. Most people does not feel comfortable to speak when
you are too close to them. Sitting closer to each other means you are sexual interested to that person
and you may be caught in a cross fire of having a slap or be accused of seduction. Sitting closer distract
the conversation, a person you are talking to may be distracted by your hands or smell.

QUESTION 6

Section 6 of the constitutional law of South Africa ( 1996) establishes the following norms:

 All the South African Languages must enjoy the “ parity of esteem “ and be treated equally
 The government must take legislative and other measures to regulate and monitor the official
language
 The status and use of indigenous language must be enhanced.

The language planning viewers of South Africa most threatened by this laws above it not working for
them and some sees it as a resource. Those who are threatened by multilingualism their complaint is
that most people no longer speaks their mother tongue or proud of their language and that leads to
other languages being taken for granted because the aim now is to speak the most popular language
and it affects the traditions . Most people now do not know their root because they are always changing
and adding languages . Those who sees it as a resource they sees multilingualism as a cultural diverse
people are exchanging their identities are no longer captured into one culture and they are sure that it
will bring peace to the nation and reduce Stereotype. They are encouraging it and they consider
someone who speaks more than one language a native of all lands because he/ she can adapt anywhere
in the world.

2. Promote the equitable of the use of official languages in South Africa

3. Enables all the South African to use their official languages of their choice as a matter of right
within the range of contexts specified in this Act With a view to ensure equal access to government
services and programmes, and to knowledge and information

4. Provide for a regulatory framework to facilitate the effective implementation of the constitutional
obligations concerning multilingualism
