Research Methodology

The chapter presents the research methodology of the study. It includes a

discussion on the research design and research methods covering the

research environment, research subjects, instrumentation, data gathering

techniques and statistical analysis.

Research Design

The study will use a quantitative research design to determine the

carbon storage potential of urban trees in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

Research Environment

The study will be conducted at Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

This city has a total land area of 37,880 ha and is located on the Northern

extension of the Yllana Bay and is the regional center of Zamboanga

Peninsula and the second-largest city in the region and province after the

independent City of Zamboanga.

Sampling Design

This study will use simple random sampling technique in which the

researcher randomly selects a subset of participants from a population. Each

member of the population has an equal chance of being selected to be part of

the sample to know the carbon storage potential of urban trees in Pagadian

City.

Research Instrument

The study will map-out and determine the carbon storage potential of

urban trees in Pagadian City, the study will be using the following:

Diameter Tape – to accurately measure the diameter of a tree. This

tape is graduated to reflect a conversion from tree circumference to tree

diameter.

Clinometer – is use to measure the height of trees , using the

clinometers the researchers could determine the angle from their position to

the highest point in the tree it is useful in getting the tree’s total height.

Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) – a software that

allow user to create, edit, map-out, visualize, analyze and publish geospatial

information.

Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (INvest

Tool) – a suite of free, open-source plug-in and software models used to map

and value the goods and services from nature.

Allometric Equation – provide biomass estimates from tree

measurements such as diameter at breast height (DBH) and height.

Data Gathering

This study will employ a basic random sampling technique to identify

the particular number of barangays that will be studied. For Pagadian City,

there are now 25 designated urban barangays. In addition, researchers will

utilize clustering methods in the collection of data.

The study also adapted the following allometric equation used by

Paquit et. al. (2023) to estimate the carbon storage potential:

Aboveground biomass (kg):

Exp(-2.289+2.649xIn(DBH) -0.021 x (In(DBH)))2

Carbon Content (kg):

Biomass in kg x 0.45
