days, the sun was shining and it was good weather for swimming. I decided to
dive in the ocean. It was the most horrible situation I saw in my life. I was diving
on the ocean when suddenly I had a shark attack. The shark was attacking my
hands and I was trying to escape to save my life. My wife Polina ran asking for
help. Two fishermen on a boat came very fast to help. I was able to get into the
boat and save my life. I was bleeding and I lost my hand. They took me to
hospital. We reached there after a long journey by car. I had an operation and I
got a new iron hand.

READING 2

WORDS).

Global warming is a serious problem for the sea life. The change of the water
temperature and the rise of the sea level can be very harmful for the sea creatures.
Scientists think that global warming is mostly caused by human activity.

Glaciers are large sheets of snow and ice that are found on land all year. They are
found in places like the western United States, the mountain of Europe and Asia. As
water gets warmer by global warmer glaciers on land melt and add more water to
the oceans.

Rising of the sea level is a threat for many sea animals like polar bears, penguins
and seals. These animals use the ice as a home to live in and when there isn’t
enough snow, these animals will extinct.

Global warming is also a big problem for turtles. The rise of the sea level reduces
the space of beaches, so turtles will have a problem in laying their eggs. Therefore,
they might travel for longer distances and die.

It also has an impact on coral reefs. The release of CO2 from global warming and
the reduction of oxygen affect the coral reefs and they become weak or dead.

Lora began to cry again. Sara was very sad because she knew that her sister
loved the cat very much. So, Sara suggested to take the cat and burry him in
her garden in New York . She told her sister that she could come and visit him
sometimes. Lora liked the idea. Sara couldn’t stay with her sister for a long
time because her two sons would come from school. So when it was five
o'clock, Sara said goodbye to her sister and Lora put the dead cat into a
shopping bag. Sara took the shopping bag and walked to the bus stop. When
the bus arrived, she got on the bus, sat down and put the shopping bag on the
floor beside her feet. Next to her was an old man. He was friendly. He asked
Sara about her children and talked about his sons as well. Sara enjoyed talking
with him and this made the trip short. When the bus arrived at her bus stop,
she thanked the old man and said goodbye. She got off the bus and walked for

READING 2 (Items 5–10)

Read the text. For each question, write a short answer (not more than FOUR
WORDS).

Many people prefer to eat at the restaurant because they are busy with their
jobs. They don’t have time to prepare their foods or wash dishes. They
simply order meals from a restaurant and everything is ready for them.
Personally, I think eating at home is better. If you cook food at home, you
have more control over the ingredients. This means that you will buy fresh
ingredients instead of heating the frozen ones several times. You can also
control the amount of food you eat. While in a restaurant, you may eat a full
plate of food "just because you paid for it."
Preparing food at home is also safer for children. Unlike adults and old
people, small children can become easily ill because of the poor quality of
foods. They may have diarrhoea or stomachache. It is also known that many
people eat and drink using the same spoons, forks, dishes, cups and bottles
which are not even properly cleaned well. So, children may get diseases
easily and quickly. Eating in a restaurant also costs a lot of money. Most of
the good meals are expensive. So, it would be difficult for low salary families
to pay for it.
In conclusion, I prefer cooking at home because of the money and health
issues, but people will make the choice that fits their lifestyle best.

For each item, shade in the bubble next to the correct option.

READING 2 (Items 5–10)

Read the text. For each question, write a short answer (not more than FOUR
WORDS).

Many people choose to travel by public transport like buses, trains, planes
and bikes instead of using their own cars. This is because, in general, the
cars are often slow and expensive especially in long distance journey.

Also, public transportation does not need much of your attention. You don't
have to focus on driving. You can spend your time on reading or even writing
or anything else.

Moreover, public transport is less bad for the environment than driving a car.
For example, if you like going to places by biking or walking, this type of
public transport does not produce any kind of pollution.

On the other hand, public transport has some disadvantages. For example,
public transport is not likely to pick you up at your houses and drop you off
the way a car would.

Moreover, travelling with your own car means you can travel where you want
without having to pay for more transport. You can also make any stops if
you like and travel anytime that is good for you.

Finally, in my opinion, public transportation is really good for the people,

who don't have to buy a car or petrol or even pay for any insurance.

There was a little girl who lived in a town near the sea with her father. She

her father to go out with her cat to play. He told her not to go and he asked
her to play inside the house because it was getting dark. The girl became sad
and went to her room. In the evening, he called his daughter for dinner, but
he found her crying. The girl told her father that she couldn’t find her little cat.
So, they went outside to look for the cat, but they didn’t find it. He promised
his daughter to get a new cat for her. Two days later, the girl went to play
outside. While she was playing, she found her cat in a big hole. She ran
quickly to call her father to help her cat. The father immediately got the cat
out of the hole. Unfortunately, the cat had a broken leg. The girl looked after
the cat and gave her some food. She was happy to find her cat again.

READING 2 (Items 5–10)

Read the text. For each question, write a short answer (not more than FOUR
WORDS).

We get our knowledge about the world and our life from two sources: from
experiences and from books. Those two resources are both important, but
which of them are more important?

Knowledge from books forms very important part of our knowledge. We

learn knowledge from books to make our success and build our country. A
student learns Math and scientific knowledge and become a scientist or
engineer. We cannot learn without books. Moreover, we get knowledge
about life and the world by reading books, magazines and newspapers. This
is also very important, as we cannot experience everything by ourselves.

On the other hand, we cannot learn everything from books. “Experience is

the best teacher” is an old saying which I agree with. The most important
and sometimes the hardest lessons we learn in life by taking part in
situations. We learn how to deal with others or how to get self- respect from
our experience, not from books.

Both learning sources, books and experience are very important to us. But in
my opinion, knowledge from experiences are more important, because
without knowledge from experience it is impossible to get a real
understanding of knowledge from books and how to use this knowledge to
real world situations.

Our story today is about a yacht called Kaz . Derek Batten was the owner of
the yacht. Derek planned for a voyage from north to west Australia. He invited
with him his two neighbours Peter and James. The yacht left the port on the
Whitsundays coast on April 152007. The weather was windy and the sea was
rough. After three days some fishermen saw the yacht and called a rescue
team. The team caught up with the yacht and boarded it.
There was no one on the board of the yacht. All the crew were missing.
After searching the team found the yacht in a good condition, and the engine
was still working. Only the yacht’s sails were badly damaged. They found a
plate of food was set on the table and a laptop was left turned. Also the life
jackets were there too.
The last moments of the men were recorded on a video tape by James .The
video showed Derek directing the yacht. Peter was fishing in a very relaxing
manner.A wide search was done for five days, but unfortunately no sign of the
men was ever found.

.
At around midnight, Ali and I were walking back home from a supermarket. In
the middle of the road, we noticed a suspicious move in front of a jewelry
shop. We hid behind a car to see what was happening. There were three men
trying to break the door of a jewelry shop. We wanted to stop them. So, I
suggested to Ali that we should phone the police. He said "No" because he
thought the thieves might escape before the police arrive. Ali said that it would
be better if we throw some stones towards them so that the thieves would be
scarred and run. However, the theft was very fast and the thieves could run
away with the stolen jewelry before we could do anything. We felt sad and
went home. I told my father about the story. He said that we needn’t to worry
because the police would catch the thieves. Fortunately, the street video
cameras had recorded the thieves so the police could catch them easily. We
felt very happy about that.

Travelling is the best way of enjoying holidays and having new experience. People
like to go to different places inside and outside their countries. Travelling abroad
has become easier with different types of transport but more expensive. That is
why I think one should explore his own country first. There are many advantages
for that. First, it is much cheaper to move around the country using your own car or
any other forms of transport. Second it is a chance to see the beautiful beaches,
cities, villages, mountains and have fun. So you learn about various places and
historic or modern buildings too.

However, you should know the timing of visits when you go to see the historic
buildings. Third, you may face the problem of language in foreign countries, but in
your country you don’t have this problem. Fourth you can take more members of
your family and use the spare money to eat in luxurious restaurants with them.
Fifth, the places that you visit become more popular and services will be improved
to other visitors in the future. For example, there are more beautiful beach resorts
on the coast of Oman than before. Tourism in your country is very exciting and a
chance to expand your knowledge.

Parents have different opinions about reading scary stories to their children.
A lot of the parents think that reading these stories for children can be a real
danger. They think that these stories can make children afraid of darkness
and cause problems in their sleeping. After reading scary stories, children
refuse to sleep alone and sometimes scream and cry while they are sleeping.
Therefore, parents try to protect their children by making sure that the
stories they read to their children are not scary at all.
However, scientists think that scary stories have lot of fun to children.
Sometimes, they are not only entertaining, but also help children to explore
their feelings. It looks impossible to stop children from reading or listening to
such stories. They will grow up and certainly read scary stories at some
points of their lives. They think also that if children are stopped from reading
scary stories at home, they may read them somewhere else. They also say
that some television programs such as cartoons have some scary pictures.
Children also sometimes listen to such stories from their friends in the
playgrounds or at schools. Therefore, parents should read different kinds of
stories for children because scary stories are a natural part of children's life.
