Technical Bulletin #239

Transmission: AODE
Subject: Neutrals at a stop
Application: Ford, Lincoln
Issue Date: 1994

AODE
Neutrals at a Stop
A neutral condition when coming to a stop can be caused by a stuck 3-4 shift valve or a partially restricted
shift solenoid. To qualify the concern, compare forward clutch pressure to mainline pressure (figure 1). If main-
line pressure is normal but forward clutch pressure is zero, the 3-4 shift valve is still in the shifted (fourth gear)
position.

A second way to qualify this concern is to drive the car in the overdrive disabled mode (shifter in D position on
1992 models, O/D cancel button on 1993 to present models). The 3-4 shift valve will never move to the shifted
position so the concern should disappear.

Technical Bulletin #239

Step 1 Remove the pan

and shift solenoid assem-
bly (figure 2).

Figure 2

Step 2 Reinstall the two

solenoid bolts (torque to
80-100 in. lbs.). Blow
into the solenoid feed
hole as shown (figure 3).
If the 3-4 shift valve is
free, you will feel an
increase in spring force at
the 3-4 shift valve plug
while you blow into the
solenoid hole.

Step 3 If the 3-4 shift

valve is not stuck, replace
the shift solenoids. The
correct replacement part
number is F4AZ-
7G484B. Figure 3
