Thermometer

A thermometer is a device used to measure the temperature of an object. It is an essential

tool used in various fields such as medicine, meteorology, and scientific research to measure the
temperature of an object or environment accurately. The temperature is usually indicated in
degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F), depending on the scale used.
Types of Thermometers:
 Mercury thermometer – are widely used in various
industries and applications due to their accuracy and
reliability in measuring temperature. The principle
behind their operation lies in the unique properties of
mercury, which expands and contracts in a predictable
manner in response to changes in temperature.

 Alcohol thermometer – that measures temperature using an

alcohol solution. The alcohol solution expands when the
temperature rises and contracts when the temperature falls, and
the thermometer measures the change. The ethanol version is the
most widely used due to the low cost and relatively low hazard
posed by the liquid in case of breakage.

 Digital thermometer - offer a higher level of precision and

convenience compared to mercury thermometers due to
their advanced technology and features. This digital
display provides a more accurate and precise measurement,
often to the decimal point, allowing for more precise
monitoring of temperature changes.

Manometric Thermometer

A manometric thermometer is a type of thermometer that measures the pressure of air. It

uses a sealed tube with a piston in it to measure the pressure of the air. As the pressure of the air
changes, the piston moves and the thermometer records the temperature. It is also sensitive to
small changes in pressure, making it suitable for measuring low-pressure gases.

Types of Manometric Thermometers:

 Mercury Manometric
working fluid. The most basic form of this instrument is a U-shaped
glass tube filled with mercury. More complex versions deal with very
high pressure or have better means of filling with mercury.

 Manometric Digital Thermometers – are a type of

thermometer that measures air pressure and temperature. They
use pressure sensors to record changes in air pressure and
temperature, which are then used to calculate the temperature.
This type of thermometer is more accurate than traditional
thermometers, as it takes into consideration changes in altitude
and weather.
