● This is a practice session of the
‘Surface Areas and Volumes’.
As usual we will proceed in this
session with an interesting
storyline.
● Have you ever visited a village?
● So what are the different objects
that you would come across in a
village?
<wait for students’ response>
● Yes, all these things. But let’s
focus on the village water tank
for now.

2 Narration:
● Welcome to Shikrapur village.

Connect:
● The villagers are having a tough
time with some of the
calculations involving the
plastering of the water tank
which is almost cylindrical in
shape.

3 Narration:
● The inner diameter of the water
tank is 4.20 𝑚 and its depth is 5
𝑚
● The sarpanch of Shikarapur has
decided to plaster the inner wall
of the water tank to stop a leak
in the tank.
● The cost of plastering the wall is
₹52 per 𝑚2. He wants to estimate
the cost of plastering so that he
can sanction the fund.

Connect:
● So let’s help him with this, and
further, learn a few important
properties of a cylinder in this
learning capsule.

4 Video duration: 00:01:20

Key takeaways:
● Curved surface area of a cylinder
● Total surface area of a cylinder
Connect:
● Let’s revise these formulas again
so that it will be easier for you to
understand.
5 Tutor point:
● Recall the formulae for surface
areas of the right circular
cylinder.
Dictate and Write:
Curved surface area of a cylinder = 2πrh
Total surface area of a cylinder =
2πr(h + r)
Tutor point:
● Where r, h are radius and height
of the cylinder respectively.
Connect:
● Now that we have this
information about the cylinder,
let’s help the sarpanch in finding
the cost of plastering the inner
wall of the tank.

6 Explain:
● We have to find the inner surface
area of the water tank. Then we
will find the cost of plastering
the wall of the water tank from
inside.

Dictate and Write:

Here, r = 4.2/2 m = 2.1 m, h = 5 m
Inner surface area of the water tank =
Curved surface area of the water tank
from inside:
= 2πrh = 2π×2.1×5
= 2×(22/7)×2.1×5
= 66 m2
Total cost of plastering = (Inner curved
surface area of the water tank) ×
Plastering rate
= 66 m2 × ₹52 per 𝑚2
= ₹3432
Connect:
● Now that we’re done with
helping sarpanch, let’s try to
solve a few questions based on
the concept of surface areas of a
cylinder.

TA Q01: If the radius of a cylinder is halved and its TSA remains unchanged, find the new height of the cylinder.

Knowledge point/Learning evidence:

● To solve problems by applying the formula of the total surface area of a cylinder.

7 Tutor Points:
● Read the question statement.
Explain:
● We have to find the new height
of the cylinder.
● Let the radius of the cylinder is r
and height is h.

Dictate and Write:

Initial TSA of a cylinder =
2πr(h + r) ---(i)
New radius = r/2
Let the new height of the cylinder be h1.
New TSA of the cylinder
= 2π(r/2)(h1 + (r/2)) ---(ii)
From the given data,
2πr(h + r) = 2π(r/2)(h1 + (r/2))
2πrh + 2πr2 = πrh1 + πr2/2
h1 = 2h + 2r - r/2
h1 = (4h + 3r)/2
Hence, the new height of the cylinder is
(4h + 3r)/2.
Connect:
● Now that we have solved a
question together…

8 Connect:
● It’s time for you to attempt some
questions by yourself. It is time
for a poll attack!
SA Q01: If the radius of a cylinder is doubled and its CSA remains unchanged, then its height must be halved.
A) True
B) False
SA Q02: An open cylindrical tank of diameter 4 𝑚 contains water up to a height of 3.5 𝑚. Find the area of the tank that is
wet.
A) 88 𝑚2
B) 56.52 𝑚2

Knowledge point/Learning evidence:

● To solve problems by applying the formula of the curved surface area and total surface area of a cylinder.

9 Tutor point:
● Read the question.

Time: 30 seconds

Connect: Your time is up! I hope you all

got the correct answer easily. Let’s move
to the next question.

10 Tutor point:
● Read the question.

Time: 40 seconds

Connect: And we have run out of time! I

hope you all got the correct answer. Let’s
discuss the answers now.

11 Tutor point:
● Read the question and the
correct answer.
Answer: A
Discuss the answer.
● Let ‘r’ be the initial radius and
‘h’ be the initial height of the
cylinder.
● Then,
Dictate and write:
Initial curved surface area (CSA) of the
cylinder = 2πrh ---(i)
Final radius = 2r
Final height = h1
Final curved surface area (CSA) of the
cylinder = 2π(2r)h1 ---(ii)
From the given data,
2πrh = 4πrh1
h1 = h/2
Hence, the given statement is true.
● Hence, the correct option is A.
Connect:
● Let’s check the solution of the
other poll question.

12 Tutor point:
● Read the question and the
correct answer.
Answer: B
Discuss the answer.
● Given: r = 4/2 m = 2 m, water
height, h = 3.5 m, wet area of the
tank = ?
Dictate and write:
Wet area of the tank = CSA of the tank
upto 3.5 m height + Bottom area of the
tank
<Draw the diagram of cylinder and show
water level upto 3.5 m>
= 2πrh + πr2
= 2π×2×3.5 + π×22
= 56.52 m2
● Hence, the correct option is B.
Connect:
● Now that our fundamentals on
these concepts are strong, let’s
look at questions involving
practical application of these
concepts.

TA Q02: A cylindrical roller, 2.5 𝑚 in length and 1.75 𝑚 in radius, when rolled on a road was found to cover an area of 5500

14 Tutor points:
● Given: Length of the cylindrical
roller, l = 2.5 m, radius of the
cylindrical roller, r = 1.75 m
Total rolled area = 5500 m2
● Area covered by cylindrical
roller in one revolution = Curved
surface area of cylinder
Dictate and write:
Curved surface area of cylinder = 2πrl
= 2×(22/7)×1.75×2.5
= 27.5 m2
Number of revolutions = Total rolled
area/Area covered in one revolution
= 5500/27.5
= 200

Answer: If the radius of a cylinder is
doubled and its height is halved, the
volume of the cylinder will be doubled.

Connect: Let’s solve some more

questions to have a clearer understanding
of this property.

TA Q05: Rainwater stored in a cuboidal container of length 6 𝑚 and breadth 4 𝑚 is transferred into a cylindrical vessel of
internal radius 20 𝑐𝑚. What will be the height of water in the cylindrical vessel if the height of water in the cuboidal
container was 1 𝑐𝑚?

Knowledge point/Learning evidence:

● To solve real life problems by using the concepts of the volume of the cylinder.

24 Tutor Points:
● Read the question statement.
Explain:
● Given:
Cuboidal container:
l = 6 m, b = 4 m, and h = 1 cm =
0.01 m
Cylindrical vessel:
r = 20 cm = 0.2 m, h1 = ?
● It is evident that the volume of
stored rainwater will remain the
same.
i.e.,

Dictate and Write:

Volume of water in the cuboidal
container = Volume of water in the
cylindrical vessel
lbh = πr2h1
6×4×0.01 = (3.14)×0.22×h1
h1 = 1.91 m
Hence, the height of water in the
cylindrical vessel is 1.91 m.

TA Q06: 30 circular plates, each of radius 14 𝑐𝑚 and thickness 3 𝑐𝑚, are placed one above the other to form a cylindrical
solid. Find the TSA and the volume of the cylinder so formed.
Knowledge point/Learning evidence:

● To find the TSA and the volume of the cylinder.

25 Tutor points:
● Read out the question.
● Explain the question.
● Discuss the solution.

Connect: Now, let’s solve the question.

26 Explain:
● When the circular plates are
stacked one above the other they
will form a cylinder.
● Given: r = 14 cm, Thickness of
a circular plate = 3 cm, Number
of plates = 30
● Therefore, the height of the
cylinder will be 3×30 = 90 cm.

Dictate and Write:

Total surface area of a cylinder
= 2πr(h + r)
= 2×(22/7)×14×(90+14)
= 9152 cm2
Volume of the cylinder = πr2h
= (22/7)×142×90
= 55440 cm3

TA Q07: A cylindrical tube open at both the ends is made of iron sheet which is 2 𝑐𝑚 thick. If the outer diameter of the tube
is 16 𝑐𝑚 and its length is 100 𝑐𝑚, find the volume of iron used in making the tube.

Knowledge point/Learning evidence:

● To solve real life problems by using the concepts of the volume of the cylinder.
27 Tutor points:
● Read out the question.
● Explain the question.
● Discuss the solution.

Connect: Now, let’s solve the question.

28 Explain:
● Given: h = 100 cm, Outer
radius, ro = 16/2 cm = 8 cm,
Inner radius, ri = 8 - 2 = 6 cm
● The volume of iron used in
making the tube is equal to the
volume of the bigger (outer)
cylinder minus the volume of the
smaller (hollow) cylinder.

Dictate and Write:

Volume of the iron used
= π(ro)2h - π(ri)2h
= πh((ro)2-(ri)2)
= (22/7)×100×((8)2-(6)2)
= 8800 cm3
Hence, 8800 cm3 of iron has been used in
making the tube.
