Session 10
Presentation rehearsals

Lecturer: Anna Loseva

anna.loseva@westernsydney.edu.vn
Today we will…
● Get guidelines on the final assessment: Capstone
project

● Rehearse our group presentations, receive and give

feedback, reflect on this experience
Capstone Project
What do you remember about it?
What have you
done/produced in this
course? (= artifacts)
Now let’s match your artifacts to the ULOs: Which artifact proves that you are able to…?
➢ represents your achievements, learning and

Course reflection
progress in this course

➢ is evidence-based (10 course “artifacts” of your

Capstone project (15%) choice)

➢ is reflective (the choice of artifacts is explained

and justified)

➢ consists of 2 parts:
(1) a .pdf collection of artifacts
(2) a screencast video with reflections/explanations of
each artifact as related to course learning
outcomes

➢ is submitted 7 days after Session 12 on Canvas

2 in 1

10 artifacts + video presentation about them

(1) .pdf file of the Capstone Project includes:

❏ individual assignment cover sheet

❏ APA title page + link to Capstone video presentation
❏ Table of contents
❏ 10 artifacts, each starting on a new page, each entitled
(e.g. Homework 3.1: CRAAP test evaluation)
(2) link to your Capstone video presentation:

→ file should be stored on Google Drive (enable access for “Anyone

with the link” in the sharing settings). Length of video: 8-10 minutes.
Ensure access to your video! No access to this video = 2/15 points
for Capstone max.

*** you can also include the link in the comment section
accompanying your submission (to be safe)
❏ text artifacts are fully copied & pasted texts from submitted
HW files (only COMPLETE homework is accepted)
❏ video artifacts are presented through a link + a screenshot
image. Double check that link sharing settings allow “Anyone with
the link” to watch it! Points are deducted for any unavailable
content.
❏ image of the poster is to be inserted fully (if chosen to be an
artifact)
How will I be assessed? → Check the rubrics on Canvas!
Reflection & analysis (8/15)
(assessing video presentation)

Organization (4/15)
(assessing both video presentation + artifact portfolio)

Delivery (3/15)
(assessing video presentation)
What do I talk about in the video presentation?
Build a case, an argument how these artifacts display your achievement of
course learning outcomes. In your video, convince Anna that these 10 artifacts
showcase your progress and prove that you have gained the required skills!

In your speech, follow the required presentation structure:

● Intro
● Outline
● Development of main points
● Conclusion
Decide on the structure of the
“body” part:
What ARE your main points?
★ Organize artifacts based on the
learning outcomes (ULOs)

★ Organize artifacts based on the

level of progress you’ve made (and
comment on relevant ULOs)

★ Organize artifacts chronologically

(and comment on relevant ULOs)
Typical mistakes in the video are related to lack of reflection

● Tell Anna what the task was

● Tell Anna the steps of doing that task
● Tell Anna it was easy/difficult
Session 11
Poster conference
TO-DO LIST for Session 11
● HW10.1 (individual): Poster pitch
Step 1: Record a STRICTLY 1-min video with a pitch of your poster presentation.
Persuade your classmates to see your poster in Session 11!

Tell them

(a) why they should come

(b) what they will learn from your poster

Step 2: Watch the videos of your classmates and leave a comment for at least 2 of
them.

A VERY useful note: Watching these one-minute idea pitches from TEDx&Brisbane
can be helpful.
TO-DO LIST for Session 11

BEFORE Session 11, submit your

poster file on Canvas for
assessment.
Final HW (by Session 12)
● HW10.2 (individual): Course reflection
Choose one of the options (A, B, C, or D). Write a
minimum of 500 words.

A. A letter to your past self.

B. A letter to Anna’s future BAS students.
C. A mini-essay about your skills.
D. A mini-essay revisiting your previous writing.
Final HW (by Session 12)
● HW10.2 (individual): Course reflection
Option A: A letter to your past self (min 500 words).

Write a letter to yourself back in January 2024, before you

joined this course.

In this letter, reflect on these months at university AND in

the BAS class. Use specific examples.
Final HW (by Session 12)
● HW10.2 (individual): Course reflection
Option B: A letter to Anna’s future BAS students (min
500 words).

Write a letter to a group of future students, who will be

taking BAS starting in May 2024.

Use your own experience in BAS to give useful comments

and advice.
Final HW (by Session 12)
● HW10.2 (individual): Course reflection
Option C: A mini-essay about your skills (min 500
words).

From our list of academic and soft skills, choose 1 skill that
you have improved the most in the BAS course and 1 skill
that has been most challenging for you.

Write a mini-essay about your experiences with these 2

skills.
Final HW (by Session 12)
● HW10.2 (individual): Course reflection
Option D: A mini-essay revisiting your previous writing (min 500 words).
Find a piece of writing that you have done previously for another course at university or in high school.
Read it carefully and consider what you would do differently now in terms of task completion, tone/voice,
use of evidence (if applicable), editing, proofreading, use of PAIBOC analysis, and meeting genre
requirements.

Write 3 paragraphs:
- Describe the piece of writing in detail and include the background/context of the piece of writing.
What strengths and weaknesses do you see in the writing?
- Explain how you would approach the process of writing differently now.
- Give specific examples (at least three) of things that you would change in the writing itself and why.
Be specific!

Share the original piece of writing (in Appendix) along with your three paragraphs.
GROUP PRESENTATION REHEARSALS
Procedure
1. 2 teams in a pod
2. Take turns to give your presentations
3. The listener team’s tasks DURING the rehearsal include:
● Keeping the time (10-12 mins required)
● Making detailed notes in your 3 feedback forms
4. After the team has finished their presentation, present your
constructive feedback to them. Explain your feedback from the
audience’s perspective!
1 round = 20 mins, including feedback time!
Assessment criteria for group presentation:
GROUP points:

❏ Content, Structure & Organization

❏ Visuals & Design
INDIVIDUAL points:

❏ Delivery
Important for Session 12!

All presentations that go over 12 mins

will be stopped.

Presentations that are shorter than 10

mins will lose 1 group point.
Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1
A. Research

1. DO research!
2. Show it on the slides
3. Where does your information come from? →
CITE your sources on the slides (APA)
Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1
B. Slides
1. Should be informative (only a template image and/or
a keyword is NOT informative)
2. Consider text: white on light background; font is too
small; font is difficult to read; no parallel grammar
forms; too much white space on the slide; too much
text on the slide
3. Check for typos and grammar mistakes!
Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1
B. Slides
1. “Agenda” should only include main points (no
need for introduction & conclusion here)

2. Don’t stay on the same slide for too long - change!

Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1
C. Outline language

Remove the language of outline preparation

from the slides (or your speech)
“Central idea, main points, body, support, meaningful
closure” →
Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1

BASIC content What should you do?

→ tell us something new (is Notion new

for us?)

→ do research and find interesting

data

→ add examples or stories

→ relate your presentation to our life!

Delivery
★ Manuscript - ?
★ Memorized - ?
★ Extemporaneous - ?
Extemporaneous speech is
Anna’s feedback: DELIVERY
❏ Make it easy to listen to you!
→ Language choices (simple, short sentences)
→ Pace, intonation, volume - use your voice!

ENERGY!
Relate to your audience and engage them
Engage the audience: Beginning, During, End
➔ Hook at the start to capture attention
➔ Questions during to keep the attention
➔ Questions at the end to see what they learnt

→ EASY Qs that are easy to answer on the spot

(A or B? Yes or no? How often…? Can YOU live without your phone?)
Anna’s feedback: CONTENT
Presentations that get the lowest
grades are those that cover TOO
MUCH content

● Definition of X
● History of X
● Advantages of X
● Disadvantages of X
● Reasons for X
● Consequences of X
● Solutions for X
● Tips about X
Anna’s feedback: CONTENT
❏ BEFORE introducing to us the table of
contents/agenda:
A: grab our attention (by using an
engaging hook)
B: get our interest (offer to us clear
benefits of listening to you)
Anna’s feedback: CONTENT

TELL US
Transition language - Make it smooth!
Google “signposting language”

“First we’ll have the introduction, then we’ll have the main
points…” → :(

“Next part is Khoa…” → :(

“Next is about…” → :(
MORE of Anna’s feedback:
❏ Beware of, like, nonfluencies, you
know
❏ Slides should match your speech content!
❏ Be a team: “I” vs “WE”
Let’s remember DESIGN ESSENTIALS
★ Use white space to separate and emphasize points.
★ Use headings and subheadings. Parallel language
structure!
★ Keep it simple and relevant.
★ Keep text to a minimum. Avoid complete sentences!
★ Change slides!
RULES for POWERFUL visuals
★ Effective visuals are memorable and understood quickly.
★ Simplify the data! Provide context to make sure the data is not
misinterpreted.
★ Cite your sources in the reference slide.
★ Follow the “tell-show-tell” principle:
- Tell what the audience will see
- Show what you promised
- Tell the audience the significance of the visual
Q&A PANEL in Session 12
❖ 1 panel discussion at the end
❖ 1 representative from each team
❖ Questions from the audience

So instead of Q&A slide, add a

slide that refers the audience
to asking Qs in the panel time
Handling Q&A with confidence
