Session 10
Presentation rehearsals
Course reflection
progress in this course
➢ consists of 2 parts:
(1) a .pdf collection of artifacts
(2) a screencast video with reflections/explanations of
each artifact as related to course learning
outcomes
*** you can also include the link in the comment section
accompanying your submission (to be safe)
❏ text artifacts are fully copied & pasted texts from submitted
HW files (only COMPLETE homework is accepted)
❏ video artifacts are presented through a link + a screenshot
image. Double check that link sharing settings allow “Anyone with
the link” to watch it! Points are deducted for any unavailable
content.
❏ image of the poster is to be inserted fully (if chosen to be an
artifact)
How will I be assessed? → Check the rubrics on Canvas!
Reflection & analysis (8/15)
(assessing video presentation)
Organization (4/15)
(assessing both video presentation + artifact portfolio)
Delivery (3/15)
(assessing video presentation)
What do I talk about in the video presentation?
Build a case, an argument how these artifacts display your achievement of
course learning outcomes. In your video, convince Anna that these 10 artifacts
showcase your progress and prove that you have gained the required skills!
● Intro
● Outline
● Development of main points
● Conclusion
Decide on the structure of the
“body” part:
What ARE your main points?
★ Organize artifacts based on the
learning outcomes (ULOs)
Tell them
Step 2: Watch the videos of your classmates and leave a comment for at least 2 of
them.
A VERY useful note: Watching these one-minute idea pitches from TEDx&Brisbane
can be helpful.
TO-DO LIST for Session 11
From our list of academic and soft skills, choose 1 skill that
you have improved the most in the BAS course and 1 skill
that has been most challenging for you.
Write 3 paragraphs:
- Describe the piece of writing in detail and include the background/context of the piece of writing.
What strengths and weaknesses do you see in the writing?
- Explain how you would approach the process of writing differently now.
- Give specific examples (at least three) of things that you would change in the writing itself and why.
Be specific!
Share the original piece of writing (in Appendix) along with your three paragraphs.
GROUP PRESENTATION REHEARSALS
Procedure
1. 2 teams in a pod
2. Take turns to give your presentations
3. The listener team’s tasks DURING the rehearsal include:
● Keeping the time (10-12 mins required)
● Making detailed notes in your 3 feedback forms
4. After the team has finished their presentation, present your
constructive feedback to them. Explain your feedback from the
audience’s perspective!
1 round = 20 mins, including feedback time!
Assessment criteria for group presentation:
GROUP points:
❏ Delivery
Important for Session 12!
1. DO research!
2. Show it on the slides
3. Where does your information come from? →
CITE your sources on the slides (APA)
Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1
B. Slides
1. Should be informative (only a template image and/or
a keyword is NOT informative)
2. Consider text: white on light background; font is too
small; font is difficult to read; no parallel grammar
forms; too much white space on the slide; too much
text on the slide
3. Check for typos and grammar mistakes!
Anna’s feedback for you, BAS-1
B. Slides
1. “Agenda” should only include main points (no
need for introduction & conclusion here)
ENERGY!
Relate to your audience and engage them
Engage the audience: Beginning, During, End
➔ Hook at the start to capture attention
➔ Questions during to keep the attention
➔ Questions at the end to see what they learnt
(A or B? Yes or no? How often…? Can YOU live without your phone?)
Anna’s feedback: CONTENT
Presentations that get the lowest
grades are those that cover TOO
MUCH content
● Definition of X
● History of X
● Advantages of X
● Disadvantages of X
● Reasons for X
● Consequences of X
● Solutions for X
● Tips about X
Anna’s feedback: CONTENT
❏ BEFORE introducing to us the table of
contents/agenda:
A: grab our attention (by using an
engaging hook)
B: get our interest (offer to us clear
benefits of listening to you)
Anna’s feedback: CONTENT
TELL US
Transition language - Make it smooth!
Google “signposting language”
“First we’ll have the introduction, then we’ll have the main
points…” → :(
“Next is about…” → :(
MORE of Anna’s feedback:
❏ Beware of, like, nonfluencies, you
know
❏ Slides should match your speech content!
❏ Be a team: “I” vs “WE”
Let’s remember DESIGN ESSENTIALS
★ Use white space to separate and emphasize points.
★ Use headings and subheadings. Parallel language
structure!
★ Keep it simple and relevant.
★ Keep text to a minimum. Avoid complete sentences!
★ Change slides!
RULES for POWERFUL visuals
★ Effective visuals are memorable and understood quickly.
★ Simplify the data! Provide context to make sure the data is not
misinterpreted.
★ Cite your sources in the reference slide.
★ Follow the “tell-show-tell” principle:
- Tell what the audience will see
- Show what you promised
- Tell the audience the significance of the visual
Q&A PANEL in Session 12
❖ 1 panel discussion at the end
❖ 1 representative from each team
❖ Questions from the audience
