DETAILS AND NOTES OF WORK CARRIED OUT, PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERD AND HOW SOLVED
ETC., DIMENSIONS AND SKETCHES TO BE GIVEN WHEREVER POSSIBLE

The sapugaskanda oil refinery has a tank farm that stores crude oil and refined products. The tank farm has
approximately 66 tanks. The tank farm in an oil refinery is divided into two section based on ground level. The
upper tank farm and the lower tank farm. The upper tank farm stores intermediate products, while the lower
tank farm stores finished products.

• Input – crude oil

• Intermediate products – heavy naphtha, naphtha
• Finish products – petrol, diesel, kerosene, jet A1, fuel oil, bitumen, LPG

The tank farm is a critical part of the sapugaskanda oil refinery.it provides a safe and secure place to store crude
oil and refinery products. The tank farm also helps to reduce evaporation and emissions, which is important for
environment protection.

There are two main types in an oil refinery tank farm, based on their construction.

1. Floating roof tank

2. Fixed roof tank

Internal Floating roof tank

Floating roof tanks have a movable roof that floats on the surface of the liquid. This helps to reduce evaporation
and emissions, because the roof is always in contact with the liquid. Floating roof tanks are also more resistant
to fire and explosion that fixed roof tanks. There are two type floating roof tanks.

• Internal floating roof

• External floating roof
But sapugaskanda refinery has only external floating roof.

Fixed roof tanks
Fixed roof tanks have a solid roof that is fixed in place. They are less expensive to build that floating roof tanks,
but they are also less efficient. Fixed roof tanks are more likely to evaporate and emit fumes that floating roof
tanks. They are also more vulnerable to fire and explosions.

Tank Seals

• Primary Seal - Normally a Mechanical Shoe

• Secondary Seal - Normally a wiper (Minimizes most vapor losses)

Water drain system

A water drain system in a tank is used to remove water that has accumulated in the tank. This water can come
from condensation, rainwater or other sources. It is important to ensure that the water drain system is properly
designed and installed to prevent water from accumulating in the tank.
