[1] Gordon Ramsay is one of the most popular chefs in

the world. He attributes his success to his difficult childhood.
He was born in 1966 in Scotland. His father was alcoholic
and his mother worked as a cook in the day and as a nurse
during nights to support the family. Because of misbehavior,
Ramsay changed school 17 times between the ages of 5 and
17. Ramsay’s first love was football. When he was 15, he
joined the Glasgow Rangers and played for three years until
1985 when his knee was seriously injured, ending all his
dreams of becoming a professional player. Consequently, he
returned to school and got a degree in hotel management in 1987. He became so passionate about cooking,
that after graduation he worked with the best European chefs and learnt a lot from them.

[2] In 1993, Ramsay became head chef in an outstanding restaurant in London. Five years later, he
opened “Restaurant Gordon Ramsay” in London that eventually earned a three-star rating from Michelin.
The Michelin Star is the highest honor a chef and a restaurant can receive. People in the international
cooking industry compare Michelin Stars to ‘the Oscars awards’ in cinema. Throughout his career, he
earned a total of 17 stars. Ramsay has opened numerous restaurants around the world, including Verre in
Dubai. He was named “Chef of the Year” in 2000. In 2006, Gordon decided to go global with his love for
cooking, thus expanding his business to USA, Australia, Canada, and South Africa.
[3] Ramsay has become a celebrity thanks to TV shows. In 1996, he appeared as a judge on BBC’s
competitive cooking show, MasterChef. Since then, he appeared in many documentaries and shows,
including the “Boiling Point”. This documentary is about his work life, his struggles and the success story
of opening his first restaurant. In 2020, Gordon Ramsay’s wealth was estimated at $220 million, most of
which comes from his popular TV shows like Hell’s Kitchen, Kitchen Nightmares and MasterChef. He has
also written over 20 best-selling cooking books.
[4] Things haven’t always been perfect for Ramsay. Many of his
restaurants have been shut down due to financial problems. He had to
suffer losses in millions. Besides, he has been accused of being rude
to his staff. “This is mainly because of the pressure we experience in
the kitchen,” Ramsay explains. Despite this, he is known to be a
loving family man. He makes sure he lives up to the expectations of
his family. He married Tana, a school teacher, in 1996 and they have
five children. Gordon and Tana together set up a foundation to
support charity work.
