Chapter-1
GENERAL

1.1 Introduction:

As appointed by the authority" "The Alpha Soil ancl Foundation Engineers'' carried orlt
a cletail

sub-soil investigation program for the construction of propsed Building fbr ANGANA
RESORT at Surjo Naryanpttr. Kapasia. Gazipur. The investigation works includipg execution

of 4 Nos. 120'-0" deep borings execution of SPT test. collectior-r of soii samples both in the

disturbed and in the undisturbecl state at specified depths under consideration.

above test rvorks.

are provided in the following articles.

1.2 Purposes of investigation:

Purposes of sub-soil ir-rvestigation prograrn are to obtain the follow, ing informatioir's.

I) To stratifl, the fbrmatior-r of soil

ll) 'fo record

the level of the ground water.

-fo
lll) observe the compressible behavior of the soil formation.
2

IV) To evaluate the safe bearing capacities of foundation at the different lar, ers. encountered

at diffbrent bore hole positions.

V) Finally. to suggest for sat-e and appropriate type of founclation for the prevailing sLrb-soil

conditior.r"

1.i Site Description:

'l'he project
of the constrtiction of propsed Builcling for ANGANA RESORI' ar Sr_u.jo
Narl'anpur. Kapasia. Gazipur.

1.;l Field Investigation:

]'he fleld ir-rvestigation program ir-rcludes execution of four boring. extendir"rg to the
depth

120'-0" as has been selected and pointed out by the authority. Wash boring rnethod u,as

fbllowed in drilling the bore hole after driving a 4" diameter casing pipe. T'he or.,er
all l.reld
in'estigation program includes the fblrou, ing sub-items of work.

a. Extraction of disturbed soil samples:

Soil samples in the disturbed state have been extracted fiom the each 5'-0" depth of each
boring

using split spoon sampler. These soil samplers after extraction. have duly been classified
in

sittt. il-l order to reconstruct a depth r,,,ise stratification chart of the each bore hole.
J

b. Extraction of Undisturbed soil Samples:

As both ot the physical and the engineering properties of soil are gr-eatly afltcted by
the

disturbance of the soil samples. soil samples in the undisturbed state are generallv
pret-errecl in

collection in order to pertbrm certain laboratory tests which eventuall,v help

to evaluate the
bearing capacities as well as other geo-technical observations. Four number
ol'unclisturbed
soil samples have been collected, particularly, from the top layer of clay.

c. Execution of Standard Penetration Test (SpT):

Standarc'l Penetration Tests were executed at each 5'-0" interval in all the boreholes with the

simultaneous collection of the clisturbecl soil samples. The tests were executed
b_v r-rsing a split

spooll sampler of I i/s" internal clianieter and a 140 lbs. hammer falling freelv llom a constant

height of 30" along the drill pipe. The number of blows, necessary to produce
the penetration

u'ere recorded in three difl-erent stages each at 6" of interval. The "N" vallres rvere taken as t6e

summation of the number of blows required in the 2nd and 3rd 6" of penetration
o1.the sarnpler

I'l.re "N" values are shown in the bore log charts against the respective interval of depth.
4

d. Recording of ground water level:

After completing field investigations" the level of ground water in each of the boreholes has
beerl recorc'led by a measuring tape and fbuncl witl-rir-r a variable depth of l'-0" (clon1) tp
7'-0" (dow'n) measured from the existing level of the ground. These are apparent level of
grouncl water fblmed by the entrapped surfbce water.

1.5 Laboratory Soil Tests:

"fhe
fbllowing soil tests have been performed in the laboratory for proper evaluatior.r of soil
pararneters.

1. Grain size analysis Nos.

2. Specific gravity I

3 Atterberg limit l!

4. Unit Weight (u,et & dry) lt

5. Natural rnoisture content I

6. Unconflned Compression I

7. Direct Shear

8. Consolidation lt

Grain size analysis, specific grarritv and the atterberg limit tests were carried ourt to ascertain

the detail composition of soil. Unconf-rned compression tests & Direct shear tests serve data on

shear character of soil that ultirnately lead to the evaluation of Bearing Capacitl,. Clonsolidatio,

tests furnish data of the settlement behaviors of the soil formation. Direct shear tests
serve data

on both of the cohesion and the angle of internal friction.

CONCLT]SI ONS:
Based on the above analysis. exploration data and laboratory test results fbllorvilg conclusigns
rlay be drawr regarding the sub-soil formation of the project area, proposed Building'for
ANGANA RESORT at Surjo Naryanpur. I(apasia, Gazipur.

a. It is evident fiom both fleld and laboratory investigations that the surb-soil
formation of the pro.ject area is regular in betu, een the bore holes.

b. The overall soil formation of the project area is characterized b1 cohesive nature
in the top and granular nature in the down.

C The top soil. extending to varying depth of 4'-0" to 8'-0" consists of filling soil
of rLrbbish. silty fi,e sand & clayey silt with trace very fine sancl.

d. The entire project area is covered by' a layer of original soil cornprises of
medir-rm stiff to hard clal,ey silt & loose sandy silt exists up to a varying depth of

1 1 3'-0" to i 1 8'-0" fiom the existing ground surface.

e Subsequent layers of investigation are characterized by sranular nature

consisting of silt. sand-silt mix and silty flne sand r-rp to the depth of
sand r-

investigations" (8.H"-1 & 2)

f. Dilatency of top layer is plastic and granular soil is non-plastic state. 'fhe
consistency r:f clay is medium stiff to hard rerative densitl, of sandy layer is
medium dense to dense state.

g Ihe net allowable bearing capacity of soil for shallow fbundation have been
ftrrnished in Table-01 or 02. for necessarv utilization"
20

h. Since the actual design load of proposed building is not knorvn. skin lriction
and end bearing capacities of the piles are providecl in Table-03 or 04 or 05 for
necessa ry utiI ization.

i. In this situation. where sllper structural loads are too high we m.i.v cor.rsider deep
foundations pref-erably of R.C.c. piles for the present condition of soil.

RECO MME NI) AT IONS:

Based on the above lindings and conclusions,
the following recommendations are sug-{estedJbr.
the coustruction of proposed Building for ANGANA
RESORf at Surio Narrranpur. I(apasia.
Crazipur.

a. The Deep fbundation, pref-erabl1,.of the piles should be considerecl.

b' The Bored type R.C.C. piles or pre cast R.C.C. piles are the most appropriate
type of Deep fbur-rdation for the existing subsoil conditiol
and may be
provided fiom the EGL.
c' The required values of the skin friction as u,ell as the
end bearing capacities
of the pile are provided in the Table No_3.
d^ Moreover, the carrving capacities of the Bored R.c.c. pile orpre cast R.c.c.
pile lor the different diameters or sizelembedment lengths
have also bee,
estimated and are being provided in the Table No_4
or ,j.
e. Tire Carryiu_u capacities of the Bored R.C].C. pile
of pre cast I{.C].C. pile to
be calculated from the table values (Ref': Tabre No-3)
or estimated fiom the
table values (Ref: Table No-4 or 5) rlust be confirmed
fi.onr carrying ont the
load test. covering the entire buiidins area.

Notes:-

a. 1Ton:2"000 lbs., EGl:Existing Ground Level.

b. The car, ying capacities of the pile as given in the tabre
No-4 or 5.
must be confirmed from tire load test.
c' The design engineer may serect any other arte,.rati'e
ti,,pe. depth as
well as the bearing capacity of trre foundatior.r or the ,rethod of
impro, ing the topsoil. according to his require, rent. i, the light of
infonnation provided in this report.
