Righting moment
calculations
Capt. S. Viswanathan
Righting moments
• Righting moment ois given by the formula – W x GZ
• W – is the displacement
• GZ – Righting lever.
• GZ can be calculate in 3 different ways for smaller anglke and larger
angle.
• As the metacenter shifts irregularly for a larger angle, GZ need to be
calculated with different formula.
Shift of Metacentre
BM is directly
proportional to I and I
remains constant for a
smaller angle. However,
for a larger angle, Under
water volume changes
and thus the I.
Hence BM change is
considerable and the
changes must be
considered for
calculating GZ.
Wall sided formulae for large angle of GZ
• At a large angle of heel the force of
buoyancy can no longer be considered
to act vertically upwards through the
initial metacentre (M), where the ship
is heeled to an angle of more than 15
degrees.
• The centre of buoyancy has moved
further out to the low side, and the
vertical through B1 no longer passes
through (M), the initial metacentre.
• The righting lever (GZ) is once again
the perpendicular distance between
the vertical through G and the vertical
through B1, and the moment of
statical stability is equal to W GZ.
Wall sided formula
• For small angles of heel (
up to 5°), the term BM
tan2θ may be omitted
• For angles of heel ( up to
25°), the term BM tan2θ
must be included to
account for the shift in
COB.

KN Values to calculate GZ
• GZ can be calculated by using KN
values from the table.
