Lesson/Topic: Sets: An Introduction & Additional Terms on Sets

Competency: The learner illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set, cardinality of
sets, union and intersection of sets and the different of two sets.
Introduction:
Good day! This module is all about sets. Sets are simply a collection of distinct objects
forming a group. A set can have any group of items, be it a collection of numbers, days of a week,
types of vehicles, and so on. Every item in the set is called an element of the set. Curly brackets are
used while writing a set.

Lesson Objective/s:
The students on their own will be able to:
(1) Illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set, cardinality of sets, union and
intersection of sets and the different of two sets;
(2) Apply the concepts about sets in real life situation;
(3) Explain how set is related in our daily routine.

Key Concept
 A set is a collection of well-defined objects that share the same characteristic(s). The objects
contained in the set are called elements. A set can be named using capital letters like A, B,
C, D,…Z and we use braces { } to group the elements of set separated by commas. If a set
contains many elements, we often use three dots, (… ) called ellipsis.

Example of well-defined sets: Example of not well-defined sets:

1. The set of letters in the word VIRUS 1. The set of famous dancers.
Set A = {V, I, R, U, S} 2. The set of punctual students in
2. The set of all even numbers. your class.
Set B = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10, …} 3. The set of efficient vaccines.

 The cardinality of set n(S) is the number of element(s) in a set.

 If a set has no element or its cardinality is equal to zero, then it is called an empty or null
set. Symbol: { } or ∅
 Set A is a subset of B, if and only if all elements of A are in B. symbol: A  B
 The universal set (U) is the totality of all the elements under a given situation.
 The union of sets A and B is the set containing all the elements in A or B or in both A and B.
Symbol: A ∪ B
 The set containing the common elements is called intersection of the sets (A ∩ B).
 The difference of sets A and B is the set containing elements in A but not in B. (A - B)

assume that A is the set containing students who
Bing Jenny joined the Math Club, whereas B is the set
Cyra containing students who signed up for the Glee
Raff Princess Club.

Shiela  A ∩ B = {Ralf, Emerson}
Angelin  A ∪ B = {Bing, Cyra, Paul, Angelin,
Ralph, Emerson, Princess, Shiela, Jeny}
 A – B = {Bing, Cyra, Paul, Angelin}
 B – A = {Jenny. Princess, Shiela}

Performance Task
Guide Questions:
It’s Sunday morning and you woke up with so many mess and things scattering in different
part of your house. Your mother asks you to clean the house by arranging and sorting those things
appropriate to its position. As an artist, your task is to create and draw a sketch of your house and put
