Research topic (confirmed): The Challenges Faced by SOFL Students in Enhancing
Their Argumentative Essay Writing Skills (Module III).
Objectives (confirmed)
 To collect typical difficulties SOFL students encounter in the argumentative essay
(writing module III).
 To suggest solutions to improve the argumentative genre in writing module III.

 What are some difficulties faced by SOFL sophomores in writing argumentative
genre?
 What are the underlined reasons for these difficulties?

 Quantitative research
+ When: A familiar topic with various studies about it, so the researcher knows clearly in
advance what he/she is looking for
+ Which tools: A familiar topic, so the researcher can use a questionnaire with questions
designed based on similar studies/questionnaires.
+ What data: numbers and statistics about students with different types of difficulties and
reasons.
+ How: carefully designed, objective research

1. I have difficulties in determining appropriate grammar in my writing.
2. I felt confused and had difficulties in choosing academic vocabulary.
3. I felt lazy to write because I did not understand the structure and rules in
Academic Writing.
4. I feel confused and afraid not to get an idea smoothly to write.
5. I feel afraid of being wrong because I do not have experience in
writing academically.
6. I'm feeling confused and pressured because it is the first time for me to
write.
7. I feel awkward for not getting used to academic writing. The teacher's
explanation and methods used were a little confusing.
