– 30 vuotta sitten Liettua kamppaili ja etsi tukea. Nyt me voimme tarjota tukeamme
valkovenäläisille, 24-vuotias opiskelija Adele Sumkauskaite kertoi tilaisuudessa
uutistoimisto AFP:lle.
23. elokuuta 1989 muodostetulla ihmisketjulla osoitettiin mieltä Baltian maiden itsenäisyyden
puolesta. Silloin arviolta kaksi miljoonaa ihmistä vaati muutosta käsi kädessä. Vuonna 1989
Baltian halki ulottuneella ketjulla oli mittaa yli 600 kilometriä.
The intention was to emphasise solidarity between the citizens of Lithuania and Belarus.
A human chain was formed in Lithuania from Vilnius to the Belarusian border on Sunday.
The distance from Lithuania’s capital to the Belarusian border is around twenty kilometres.
The purpose of the event was to emphasise communality and solidarity between Lithuanians
and Belarusians.
30 years ago Lithuania struggled and seeked for support. Now we can offer our support to
the Belarusians, told a 24-years-old student Adele Sumkauskaite in the event to the news
agency AFP.
It was estimated beforehand that at least 30 000 people would participate in the human
chain. According to the arrangers as many as 50 000 people took part in the event. The
majority of the protestors wore white clothes and face masks.
Also the Lithuanian president Gitanas Nausėda participated in the peaceful event.
Last year it became 30 years since the human chain that defied the Soviet Government in
the Baltic states. You can read more about the topic from this article.
President Nausėda took part also in the human chain organised in 1989. The opposition’s
candidate for the presidential election, who escaped from Belarus to Lithuania, Svetlana
Tsikhanouskaya, might also participate in the event, AFP told before the event.
The human chain that was organised in 23.8.1989 was used to protest in favor of the
independence for the Baltic states. At that time around 2 million people demanded change
hand in hand. The chain that reached through the Baltics in 1989 was over 600 kilometres
long.
According to AFP, in addition to the Lithuanian and Belarusian border area, human chains
are supposed to be organised in the cities of Tallinn and Prague.
