IGNEOUS ROCKS
By: Janine Pauline Sale Sierda

Rocks are found everywhere

Hard, soft, colorful or not they are part of the nature you should be aware
And igneous rocks is a type of rock I want to share
Get a sample, you can stare.

Igneous rocks can be made from beneath or above

Within the earth that is so hot
Magma cools slowly for a rock to form
And that is what we call intrusive igneous rock
But sometimes called as plutonic rock

Examples are diorite, gabbro and granite

Which cools so slow and gave its appearance a crystal-like
Different colors and crystal size
It all depends on how they were crystallized

On the surface of earth there are what we call extrusive rocks

Cools rapidly unlike the plutonic rocks
There is little time for crystals to form
As a result, extrusive igneous rocks have tiny crystals were born

Great examples of these extrusive rocks

Were dacite, pumice and rhyolite
Fine-grain crystal was seen formed from lava flow
So they were called as volcanic rocks also

Lets’ explore the igneous rocks texture

Where it tells us how the magma cooled and formed
There were at least six classification
That the geologist used for analyzation

Types of textures were phaneritic, aphanitic, porphyritic,

Don’t forget the glassy, pyroclastic and pegmatitic
Remember they are types of igneous rock texture
So let’s start and explore its nature

Some Rocks crystallized slowly below the Earth's surface,

Magma cools slowly the minerals have time to grow and form large crystals phase
This is what we call as PHANERITIC, minerals were seen through naked eye,
Examples are gabbro, diorite and granite
When the lava is quenched so rapidly that crystallization cannot occur
The result is a natural amorphous glass with few or no crystals at all
GLASSY OR VITREOUS textures is what we call
pumice and obsidian are great example

When some minerals grow so large that they become massive

The size ranges from a few centimeters to several meters big
This texture is what we call PEGMATITIC.
Pegmatites is an example I can give

APHANITIC form from lava which crystallize so rapidly

It has contact with the atmosphere so they cool quickly
The minerals do not have time to form large crystals and not seen vividly
Which includes basalt, andesite and rhyolite as you see

Porphyritic texture also occurs when magma crystallizes below a volcano

But is erupted before completing crystallization though
Thus forcing the remaining lava to crystallize more rapidly with much smaller crystals
you see
Sample of these were andesite porphyry and rhyolite porphyry.

Lastly we have Pyroclastic occur when explosive eruptions blast the lava into the air
Resulting in fragmental, typically glassy material
Which fall as volcanic ash, lapilli and volcanic bombs.
Example is the tuff

Now you have determined the type and texture of an igneous rocks
Explore your area and find one in your block
Identify the type and texture of your sample you’ve got
Have fun and learn more about these rocks!
