Competency-Based Learning

Laquita Ngando Duvall

1. Your Classroom

[Briefly discuss your teaching situation including grade level(s), subject area(s), number of students, characteristics of students,
tech/resources available, and other information that can be helpful in understanding of your choice of strategies and technology
tools.]

I teach fifth grade. My school is departmentalized. I teach ELA and science content. This school year I taught concurrent meaning
teaching face to face and virtual at the same time. I had twenty-five students in my homeroom. I taught 15 virtual students. My co
teacher had 28 students in her classroom. My students were multicultural. We had a limited number of Chromebooks. The students
had to share computers by grade level. The district purchased several online resources for students and teachers. I use different
technology tools in the classroom to deliver content such as Power point, Nearpod, Google, Flipgrid, Flocabulary, Brain Pop, You
tube, Iready and more. I research technology tools to incorporate in my classroom based on my student’s interest. My students use
technology for instruction, assignments, projects, personalized plans, formative, and summative assessments.

2. Strategies

What is CBL?

[Explain what CBL is compared to the traditional practice of teaching. Think about the essential features of CBL that you have seen
and read and how it is different from the traditional educational practice.]
Traditional practice teachers are teaching students in a large group. The teacher moves on to the next standard even if the students
do not master the standard. The students all work on the same standard. The traditional practice is teacher focused while CBL is
students focused. Strategies are in place to ensure equity for all students. Students try to memorize content in a traditional method to
get a good grade. Competency Base Learning allows students to advance base on their ability to master a skill at their own pace
regardless of time. Competency Base Learning is differentiated to meet different learning abilities and can lead to more efficient
student outcomes. Students learn actively using different pathways and varied pacing. The teacher can play the role of a facilitator in
a CBL classroom. The traditional practice of teaching model makes it hard for teachers to meet the needs of all students. Time is not
always on teacher side during traditional teaching.

Georgia PSC Standards of Personalized Learning

[Discuss what GPSPL standards are addressed and how they are addressed.]

1.Prioritize Executive Function: The teacher prepares learners to take responsibility for their learning through acquisition and
executive function. The students will be engaged in a learning environment to promote agency through think pair share, group
discussions, and essential questions. Students will complete learning activities to achieve mastery. Student engagement through
communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.

2. Learner Agency: Students have a choice when researching performance task projects, creating rubrics, learning targets, and
working individual plan for Iready. Students can create performing projects that align with standard.
*3. Asset-Based Dispositions: Creating a learning goal poster in student friendly language. Using student interest surveys. Teacher
delivering content using student strengths through Multimodal using PowerPoint, Nearpod, Kahoot and Iready for diverse learners.

4. Growth Mindset: Design and implement adaptive tools, strategies and learning experiences to support growth towards mastery for
all learners. Student set goals to monitor progress. Teacher will facilitate a small group with Iready book, pencil, and paper. Student
complete assignment on Iready, Readworks and Khan Academy to show mastery of standard.

5.Authentic and Adaptive Assessment: Student and teacher conference about evidence of mastery. The teacher assesses students
through Iready diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments.

6. Flexible Educational Resources: The teacher provides the student with access to flexible resources such as Iready, Kahoot, Khan
Academy and Readworks.

7. Individualized Path: The students will take diagnostic in Iready. Iready will create a personalized plan for students based on their
data. Students will complete personalized to show to mastery of competency standard. Teacher design pathways for students.

3. Technology Tools of Your Choice

After reviewing our Technologies Collection or other resources and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each tool, 1) select
what tool(s) you will use for the following functions and 2) describe its strengths and weaknesses and how you would use each tool
given your unique teaching situation. You do NOT have to use high-tech technology for all functions. Low-tech like paper and pencil
or classroom posters sometimes work better than digital tools.
