rooms and connect to the enclosure and ground buses of all equipment in the room.
5 Remove non-conductive coatings from threads or other contact surfaces to ensure good electrical continuity.
6 Protect all exposed grounding conductors from mechanical damage.
7 The earth bars risers shall be connected through insulated copper conductor 150mm² to a separate earth pit and with
removable cover in basement area as per approved shop drawings.
8 All switchboards, metal conduits, trunking system, cable trays, metal frames, enclosures, light fittings and cable
sheaths shall be bonded and connected to the earth bar of the appropriate switchboards as Approval Shop drawings.

10 Approved 15mmx1200mm Solid Copper earth rod complete with coupler, driving stud, spike and a conductor clamp,
sufficient no. of rods of suitable length shall be installed to provide an overall resistance to earth not exceeding
1ohms. After driving each Earth Rod into the soil, earth resistance is measured and recorded and if desired value is
not achieved, the process is continued until the project specific readings are achieved. The complete earth rods &
related accessories are encased in a concrete inspection pit located the ground level.
11 All earth cables levels shall be coordinated with other services.
12 All paints and coating of the equipment’s will be removed from the contact surfaces to ensure good electrical
conductivity.
13 Raise ITR for inspection of Earth Protection System as per approved shop drawing and specification, by Engineer.

14 All the main panel boards must have a service entry current protection device fitted in, as per the BSEN 62305.

 INSTALLATION OF LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM

1 Use Bi-metallic clamp in compliance to BSEN 50164-1, when different metal (e.g. Copper and aluminum) is to be
connected.

2 Lightning Protection system shall be bonded to roof vents, balcony handrails and all external metallic part projecting
through the roof.

3 Use mechanical connections between tapes, cables, aerial terminals and ground rods in compliance with BS EN
62305 standards.

4 Use 25mmx3mm copper tape for roof air termination network installed in grid mesh as per Lightning Protection
Level. Or steel structure/conductive materials which is part of the structure can be used as an air termination mesh
network. Electrical continuity between various parts to be ensure. Strike pad to be installed on the roof as applicable

5 Use DC tape clip every 1 meter for fixing copper tape as approved shop drawing.

6 Provide Test Clamp for each down conductor to allow access for testing purposes.

7 Down conductors are to be spaced as per class of lightning protection system around the periphery of the structure.

8 Down conductors to be minimum of 2x16 mm diameter rebar continuous from basement to ground floor level and
structural steel columns from basement floor to the roof level. If the rebar cannot be used as a down conductor,
dedicated conductor 25x3mm copper tape will used supported with metallic DC clip at every meter for the first 20m
of the building height & 500mm thereafter

9 Overall electrical continuity of the down conductor measure from lower to upper level of the structure shall not be
greater than 0.2 ohms.

10 The down conductors shall be connected from the air termination network to the earth electrodes using 15x1200mm

10ohms.

11 Install 25x3 mm copper tape for looping between all lightning earth electrode (as applicable)

12 To get a complete lightning protection system measured at any point, should not exceed more than 10 ohms

13 As applicable strike pads are used on areas which are readily accessible where air termination copper tape need to be
embedded inside the FFL.

14 Wherever protection of internal system against over-voltages caused by lighting discharges requires SPDs (Surge
Protection Devices) these shall be conformed to BSEN 62305-part 4.

15 All the main panel boards must have a service entry current surge protection device of Type 1 fitted in, as per the
BSEN 62305.

16 Raise ITR for inspection of Lightning Protection System as per approved shop drawing and specification, by
Engineer.

INSPECTION, TESTING & RECORD

INSPECTION:

Rev: 00
Lunar Electro LC0166-LUX-MST-EL-004
Rev 001
Method Statement
Quality Assurance

All Lightning Protection systems should be visually inspected by a competent person during installation, after completion and
after alternation or extension in order to verify that they are in accordance with the recommendations in BS EN 62305
standards.
Visual inspection should be repeated at fixed intervals, preferable not exceeding 12 months.

In addition, the mechanical conditions of all conductors, bonds, joints and earth electrodes should be checked and observation
to be noted.

During periodic inspections of the Lightning Protection system the bonding of recently added services should be checked to
ensure it is in accordance with the recommendations of the code.

TESTING:

On the completion of the installation or any modification to it, the following measurements and/or checks should be made
A. The resistance to earth of the earth termination network of each earth electrodes in accordance with the Fall of
Potential (FOP) method.

B. The resistance readings for the Earthing System should be less than 1 ohm and Lightning Protection System should be
less than 10 ohms.

C. The result of a visual check of all conductors, bonds and joints of the measured electrical continuity should not be
greater than 0.2 ohms.

D. The service entry current SPD is working properly.

If the resistance to the earth of the Lighting Protection & Earthing System exceeds 10 & 1 ohm/s respectively, the value should
be reduced.

If the resistance is less than 10 (for LPS) and/or 1 (for ES) ohm/s, but significantly higher than previous readings, the cause
should be investigated, and any necessary remedies action should be taken.

Particular attention should be given to the following:

Metallic service pipes (such as water, gas, etc.) must not be used as earth electrodes.

All exposed-metallic-parts of an installation and of appliances must be connected to earth via appropriate earth conductors, so
as to protect against electric shock.

Since the service entrance (SPDs) are designed to protect against dangerous sparking only as per BSEN 62305-3. The
specialist lightning protection installer shall need to fit additional protection at the sub-distribution and near equipment to
protect electronic equipment to BSEN 62305-4. Both types of SPDs are required in accordance with BSEN standard if the
Risk Assessment demand this.
