Public universities are contributing to create quality graduates through high education in Sri

Lanka. University background which includes separated family support, academic tasks,
personal expectations, examinations, poor socio economic status contributes to negative
emotional problems.

Students who are in Nursing field have exposure to practicals such as injections, blood
withdrawals, providing care in clinical settings. Academic activities along with clinical
appointments trigger emotional problems related to depression, anxiety and stress. Besides, it
affects mental health is reduced than previous status. Final year university students have more
risk than other groups towards negative emotional problems. It may be due to on successful
graduation, internships, seeking job opportunities as well as expectations on the jobs. Students
who are with negative emotions associated with depression, anxiety, stress symptoms will face
several problems such as poor academic performances, relationship problems, discontinuing the
studies, poor coping strategies, reduced self-confidence, difficulties in managing daily life
problems.
1.1 Justification.

Negative emotional problems which are associated with depression, anxiety, stress are big
barriers to health. It affects the body physically, psychologically, emotionaly and spritually.
Nursing students are vulnerable groups towards negative emotional states. Among them Final
year Nursing students are a most predominant group due to strict academic formalities and
clinical exposures. Several studies were done in Sri Lanka related to the proposed topic.
However, no studies are done in the nothern part of Sri Lanka. Thus, it would be helpful to
identify the level of mental health burden and improve their health.
