Stairwell Pressurization

BASIS OF DESIGN:
1. Butcher and Parnell Formula
2. No. of Doors Open = 2

EQUATIONS TO BE USED:
Q1 = Airflow to be supplied to overcome the leakage around doors. =17.9 A1 P 1/2 N1
Q2 = Airflow to be supplied to overcome loss through open doors. =150 A2 N2
N1=No. of doors in the stairs 8
N2=No. of open doors during exiting 2
A1=Crack area around door (in2) 28.83
A2=Area of each door open (ft2) 22.59
K=59 for standard switchback type stair
45 for scissors type stair
P = Required pressure differential between staircase and corridor (in.Wg), 0.2
150 = Air velocity in feet per minute
Safety Factor = 10 %

Where;
A1 = (perimeter of door)(crack opening)
Door dimensions = 2100 mm(Height) x 1000 mm(Width)
= [( 2100 x 2) + ( 1000 x 2 )] ( 3 mm )
= 18600 mm2
= 28.83 in2

A2 = Height x Width
= 2100 mm x 1000 mm
= 2100000 mm2
= 22.59 ft.2

Q1 =17.9 A1 P 1/2 N1
= 17.9 x 28.83 x 0.2 1/2
x 8
= 1846 CFM
= 871 lps

Q2 =150 A2 N2
= 150 x 22.59 x 2
= 9037 CFM
= 4263 lps

QT = Q1 + Q2
= 10883 CFM
5134 lps

10 % Safety Factor

QT = 11972 CFM
= 5647 lps

Say Use:
11972 CFM
5647 lps

CHECK AGAINST TOTAL DOOR OPENING FORCE

Objective: To ensure that the maximum total door opening force of 110 N (25 lbs.) is not
exceeded.

Reference: ASHRAE Equation

5.20 W A p
F = Fdc +
2 (w - d)

where:
F = total door-opening force, lb
Fdc = force to overcome door closer, lb 12 lb
W = door width, ft 3.60
A = door area, ft2 24.86
p = pressure difference across door, in.H2O 0.20
d = distance from door knob to edge of knob side of door, ft 0.25
5.2 x 3.60 x 24.86 x 0.20
F = 12 +
2 x ( 3.60 - 0.25 )

= 26 lb
= 115 N

Conclusion: Total door opening force of 110 N is not exceeded.
