There is an ongoing dispute about whether more academic works or theories should be given to

Prasetiya Mulya students rather than that fieldwork or practices. Based on our experience for
the past five semesters, it should be the case for three reasons.

As a start, business management is similar to most scientific disciplines, in which the fields are
defined by core principles that are mainly theoretical. While it is true that people are free to
express their works or research in the related fields, the fields of sciences and business
management have their respective core principles that any practitioner must abide by for those
works or research to make sense. Unfortunately, based on our experiences, fieldwork or
practices still need to teach the fieldwork participants about those core principles that define a
successful business. For instance, all second-year students in Prasetiya Mulya are required to
start their businesses, in which each of those businesses needs a good strategy to survive and
eventually grow. However, subjects with a crucial strategic nature, such as Economics of
Strategy and Organizational Design and Dynamics, are only taught starting in the third year. As
a result, students who start those businesses may need more time to operate as organized and
smoothly as they want to, not because of competition from rivals but rather due to a lack of
competence within the students themselves, which should have been addressed beforehand.

We could learn from people's experiences by giving theories for further argument. After
spending years studying in Prasetiya Mulya, doing tasks such as study cases help a lot in
adding new insights about business, marketing, and any other essential business components.
By studying people's processes and mistakes, we could avoid or make decisions based on their
impact when running a business. Besides, existing experiences could lead us to have a better
mindset.

Last but not least, the theories we learn indicate that we should have more capabilities,
knowledge, and credibility about business and economics, considering that the public sees
Prasetiya Mulya as an educational institution that excels in both fields. Hence, Prasetiya Mulya
is preparing us, students, to not only have an entrepreneurial mindset but also to become
professional experts in the business field.

In conclusion, Prasetiya Mulya should prioritize academics instead of practical work because, by
doing so, students will have enough building blocks in order to excel in professional or business
settings. This aspect will further enhance Prasetiya Mulya's fresh graduates' qualities to thrive in
the business or professional world.
