Chapter 4: Exercises

Exercise n°1: Salinity of oceans

Salt water contains sodium chloride. Oceans have a concentration by mass of 35 g.L-1 in salt.
1. What is the formula for sodium chloride in water?
2. How many liters of such water does it take to be able to extract a mass of salt equal to one
ton?

Exercise 2: Sugar concentration

200 mL of sugar water is prepared by dissolving two pieces of sugar weighing 5.5 g each in
water.
1. Give the name of the solvent, the solute and solution.
2. Calculate the concentration of the solution prepared as described above.
3. What happens to this concentration if the volume of the solution is reduced by two times
by means of evaporation?

Exercise n°3: Questions with multiple choices.

For each question, indicate the correct answer(s).

Chapter 5: Exercises
Exercise n°4: Colored solution
Here are 4 solutions of grenadine juice of
different concentrations. (See opposite)
1. Identify the most concentrated solution by
justifying your response.
2. Why can't this colour scale be used to
measure the concentration of all
solutions?

Exercise n°5: Dissolution of potassium chloride

5.85 g of potassium chloride powder KCl(S) was mixed with distilled water to obtain 0.40 L of
salt water solution.
1. Calculate the concentration cm of the prepared saltwater solution.
2. Will this solution conduct electric current? Justify.

Exercise n°6: Determination of mass, concentration, and volume

1. What is the concentration of 3 g of copper (II) sulphate dissolved in 250 mL of water?
2. What is the mass of sodium chloride dissolved in 100 ml a saltwater solution whose
concis entry is 1.5 g/L?
3. How much of a 0.1g/L copper sulphate solution should be taken to dispose of 0.8 g of
copper sulphate?

Exercise 7: Analysis of
beverage labels
The following two beverages are
considered:

FANTA ICE TEA

1. Determine for each drink the concentration by mass of sugar. Indicate the calculations
without forgetting the units.
2. Half of the Fanta was drunk. Has the mass concentration changed?
3. If a sugar cube weighs 6 g, determine the number of sugar water bitscorresponding to the
mass of sugar dissolved in a glass (250 mL) of Fanta.
