EXAMPLE 10: The graph below shows the changes in UK birth rate of women in 6 different

age groups from 1973 to 2008.

The line graph compares the birth proportion in the UK amongst 6 different age groups during
the period of time from 1973 to 2008.
Overall, it is clear that whereas the four age groups such as 25-29, 20-25, under 20 and over the
40s experienced a considerable decline, the other age groups namely 30- 35 and especially 35 -
39 witnessed a growth in their birth figures.
Specifically, in 1973 the group of women aged 25-29 was the highest of all groups studied,
reaching 140 births per 1000 people, compared with the figure 125 in their counterparts aged
20-25. The figure was considerably lower for under 20s and over 40s groups being at 60 and 20,
respectively. During the 35-year period, the 25-29 age group experienced remarkable
fluctuations in birth rate although the figure fell to 120 in 2008. Group 20-25, under 20s and over
40s generally witnessed continued decrease in the same period of time.
By contrast, there was an improvement in birth proportions in the other groups. Significantly,
women aged from 35 to 39 exhibited an increase to above 60 in 2008. The proportion reached
more than 80 in the age group 30 - 35 in the same year.
To sum up, despite the up and down trend, women in the age group 25 - 29 were the main
contributors to the birth rate in UK during the whole period.
